Company Overview:
Do you enjoy making a difference in a child's life, transforming education, and evolving learning? Come join Teachstone, the interaction company! Teachstone® was founded in 2008 to deliver the Classroom Assessment Scoring System® (CLASS®) nationwide and around the globe. Developed through years of research, the CLASS observation tool measures the interactions between teachers and children, which have been shown to drive learning and lifelong achievement. Teachstone helps organizations conduct classroom observations and provides professional development so that teachers improve, and children learn more. Our online subscription service, myTeachstone, simplifies CLASS implementation by combining observation data with a robust library of CLASS resources and professional development.

At Teachstone, everything we do is about improving the ways teachers interact with their students. We train coaches and observers, build and deliver online support programs, design professional development – all of it grounded in one proven fact: the interactions teachers have with students have a lasting impact on their academic and developmental success. By helping educators describe, measure and improve their interactions and relationships with students, Teachstone is transforming education nationwide, one interaction at a time.

Role Overview:

We’re hiring a Lead Engineer to anchor the technical direction of a new product team focused on evolving and scaling Teachstone’s observation services. You own technical feasibility and system design within the team’s scope. You identify constraints and risks early, make tradeoffs explicit, and shape solutions that can be delivered with confidence. You bring strong backend judgment and can work across the stack when needed. You consider data integrity, user workflows, performance, and operational impact as parts of a single system. You partner closely with Product and Design and collaborate with other engineering teams when systems, data, or standards intersect. You are accountable for how solutions are built, how they integrate with the broader platform, and how they perform in production.

What You’ll Do

  • Own feasibility assessment and architectural approach for major initiatives.
  • Break down ambiguous problems into clear architecture and delivery phases.
  • Lead technical design discussions and drive key decisions.
  • Set and uphold a high bar for code quality, testing, and operational readiness.
  • Lead implementation of complex features or system changes.
  • Improve reliability, performance, and cost efficiency where it matters.
  • Represent the team in cross-engineering discussions when systems or data intersect.
  • Mentor engineers and raise technical rigor within the team.

What We’re Looking For

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong backend expertise.
  • Experience operating as a technical lead within a product team.
  • Strong system design, API design, and data modeling fundamentals.
  • Experience building and operating production systems at scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate feasibility and sequence work pragmatically.
  • Experience working in cloud-hosted environments (e.g., AWS) with CI/CD and automated testing.
  • Experience with workflow automation or AI-enabled features.
  • Clear communicator who can explain tradeoffs and constraints effectively.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Ruby on Rails.
  • Experience improving and evolving legacy systems incrementally.
  • Experience working in revenue-generating SaaS environments.
  • Experience mentoring other engineers.
