Description
Overview:
The Learning and Development Specialist II independently leads the design, development, and delivery of learning solutions, from foundational to advanced levels. This role facilitates complex learning activities with minimal guidance, provides mentorship to the Learning and Development Specialist I, and collaborates with subject matter experts (SMEs) and department leaders to drive employee growth and support organizational objectives through impactful training programs.
Essential Functions:
1. Project Management and Activity Implementation: 40%
- Leads the creation and development of various learning programs and training experiences to help Alterman personnel build the capabilities and knowledge needed for growth within the company.
- Leads learning project teams to build positive, collaborative partnerships among business stakeholders, SMEs and peers.
- Leads small to medium projects following the Alterman Learning and Development process.
- Reviews deliverables for accuracy and quality.
- Collaborates with Directors and Managers to develop, update, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for their teams, ensuring they are published in an easily accessible location for employee reference.
- Solicits training needs by gathering feedback from employees and managers.
- Administers the Learning Management System (LMS) by organizing, tracking, and updating course content, managing user profiles, troubleshooting technical issues, generating performance and completion reports, and continuously enhancing the system to align with evolving training and development needs.
2. Instructional Design: 35%
- Develops aesthetic, well-designed complex to intermediate activities for a variety of delivery methods including eLearning, instructor-led, job aids and reference materials using standard learning activity development tools.
- Adheres to Learning and Development processes, integrating Alterman and industry standards into all content.
- Interviews and builds relationships with end-users, stakeholders, and SMEs to design relevant content and delivery methods.
- Monitors learning activity evaluation and implements recommended actions to ensure objectives are achieved.
- Serves as a videographer by capturing video for instructional content, developing storyboards, and performing video editing using advanced editing software (e.g., Camtasia) and techniques.
- Ensures regular updates and maintenance of learning materials.
3. Learning Activity Facilitation: 15%
- Facilitates basic and intermediate level learning activities in the classroom and virtually using standard techniques (e.g., role playing, simulations, self-discovery).
- Leads training sessions and workshops for employees at all levels, using engaging facilitation techniques to maximize learner engagement and knowledge retention.
- Identifies, analyzes, and understands target audiences and their specific communication needs, crafting effective messages tailored to each audience.
4. Performs other duties as assigned. 10%
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Education, Business, or a related field preferred.
- CPTD Certification (Certified Professional in Talent Development) preferred.
- 3+ years of Learning and Development Curriculum Design and Implementation experience required.
Skills/Abilitites:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to integrate into a construction environment.
- Able to communicate effectively one-on-one and in group facilitation.
- Exhibits a proactive and positive attitude, driven by self-motivation and a commitment to maintaining high standards in the workplace.
- Proficient in instructional design, facilitation techniques, and project management across diverse learning modalities.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate within and across teams.
- Strong ability to handle emotional dynamics in a room, recognizing and addressing learner discomfort or disengagement professionally.
- Expert in using open and probing questions to stimulate discussion, encourage critical thinking, and deepen understanding.
- Intermediate to advanced graphic design skills.
- Basic to advanced videography and editing skills.
- Proficient in adult learning theory and practices.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, Work).
- Proficient with eLearning tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise) preferred.
- Proficient with Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects).
- Proficient with video editing and screen recording software (e.g., Camtasia).
Work Environment:
- Office environment with regular travel required.
- Outdoor work environment with exposure to dust, heat and cold.
Physical Demands:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able work in confined spaces.
Qualifications
Education
Preferred
Bachelors or better in Human Resource Administration or related field.
Experience
Required
3-5 years:
Learning and Development Curriculum Design and Implementation experience.
