Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler School of Engineering at Chapman University invites applications for a post-doctoral fellow position in the areas of machine learning, statistics, and data science.

the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler School of Engineering offers undergraduate degree programs in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, and Software Engineering, and a graduate program in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The School also offers several interdisciplinary minors and themed inquiry programs which allow students from across other Chapman programs to explore engineering. Fowler Engineering is committed to contributing solutions to global challenges and a key component of that mission is the recruitment and support of faculty, staff, and students from the broadest possible set of backgrounds and experiences. The Swenson Family Hall of Engineering, which opened in 2021, provides state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research that allow for experiences that are truly without boundaries.
Position DescriptionUnder the direction of the Assistant Director of Labs and Makerspaces, the Makerspace Assistant will ensure the smooth operation of the Design / Create / Innovate (DCI) Lab. This includes following training, safety, and operating protocols and assisting in their development where needed. Provide support, training and mentorship for students, staff, and faculty in course-related projects, engineering-specific extracurricular activities, academic research related to fabrication, and projects that require assistance with rapid prototyping equipment and makerspace tools. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment in both the DCI Lab and Tool Crib. Perform maintenance on equipment to ensure minimal disruption to daily use. Assist in the training and onboarding of new DCI Lab student workers.
Responsibilities |
Makerspace Operations Support the day-to-day operations and activities in the Fowler School of Engineering (FSE) Design / Create / Innovate Lab makerspace and facilities. Assist in training student employees. Troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance of equipment as needed. Coordinate maintenance needs, submit/track work orders to ensure completion, and conduct routine/preventive maintenance to ensure uninterrupted services of equipment and facilities. Organize and manage records and documentation on equipment, instruments and supplies necessary for labs, makerspace and facilities. Track and update database of members’ training and access to the DCI Lab and Tech Shop.
Project support and safety Ensure the safe and efficient daily operation of the facilities. Follow all safety policies, procedures and programs; act as a responsible party for individual safety and the safety of others. Support students and faculty in course-related projects, engineering-specific extracurricular activities, and academic research related to the manufacturing/making facilities and programs. Participate in the development and implementation of training materials, safety standards, policies, and procedures for the makerspace and FSE facilities. Schedule, coordinate, and facilitate training sessions on equipment, technology, and safety.
Required Qualifications | A baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, electrical engineering, or related field. A combination of formal education and experience is highly preferred. Proficiency in computer-aided design using digital modeling and fabrication software. Familiarity with prototyping equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and woodworking equipment. Excellent oral and written English language skills with the ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups at all organizational levels, both inside and outside of the University. Technical skills to learn and use enterprise systems and applications needed for the position. Proven competence in problem-solving, work agility, attention to detail and prioritization. Computer literacy with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to learn, demonstrate and enforce proper health and safety procedures and regulations. Ability to perform general clerical functions critical to the maintenance and efficiency of the facilities and equipment. Ability to work within a budget effectively and monitor expenditures.
Desired Qualifications | Experience operating prototyping equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and woodworking equipment. Experience with printed circuit board (PCB) design and fabrication. Experience supervising and training undergraduate and graduate students on the use and operation of equipment. Demonstrated mechanical/electrical aptitude, corroborated by work history.
