Opportuity:
Division Purpose:Chief of Staff Division exists to ensure the strategic clarity, stakeholder engagement, and external visibility of KIPP Texas in service of our 54 schools, 31,000 students, and over 5,000 employees. Together, we serve as the connective tissue of the organization—aligning vision with execution, community with mission, and leadership with action—to advance and ensure educational excellence across the state of Texas.

Role Overview: 
KIPP Texas seeks an experienced and dynamic External Communications Manager to steward its brand locally, regionally, and nationally. This role will spearhead KIPP Texas’ social media and assist with media relations efforts. The Manager will focus on building and implementing strategies aligned with KIPP Texas’ yearly goals and milestones, leading content creation, planning, and distribution across social media channels, and providing guidance to network-wide social media administrators. This individual will also build engaging content partnerships, manage digital reputation, and monitor messages and comments across channels. The Manager of External Communications will report to the Director of Communications.

This position may be based out of the Austin, Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio offices. Some travel may be required.
 
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and Oversee Social Media and External Strategy:
  • Manage all editorial content for KIPP Texas’ external communication to promote strong brand storytelling and increase positive owned stories about KIPP Texas, its mission, organizational successes, students, and staff.
  • Drive KIPP Texas social media efforts, including campaign creation and execution, training school social media administrators, and driving traffic and engagement to KIPP Texas pages.
  • Build yearly social media goals around channel growth, such as followership and engagement.
  • Lead efforts on social media reputation management, including daily monitoring of comments and messages across channels and proposing strategies and messages to build and protect the brand.
  • Provide campus-level resources, training, and best practices for managing campus social media pages by creating and distributing a monthly social media newsletter and leading bi-weekly social media calls.
  • Ensure content shared on social media channels is optimized to achieve communications objectives.
  • Track analytics to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of content across all KIPP Texas Social Media Channels.
Media Relations Support:
  • Develop written materials, including press releases, media alerts, op-eds, and media pitches for an assigned region.
  • Build relationships with key media contacts in the assigned region and identify opportunities to proactively pitch brand, staff, and student stories through media outlets as appropriate.
  • Provide media prep documents and conduct media prep meetings for KIPP team members scheduled for interviews.
  • Monitor media calls, requests, and inquiries for the assigned region.
  • Utilize department tools to research media contacts who cover topics of interest for top-tier publications such as The Washington Post and Huffington Post.
General Communications Support:
  • Assist the Communications Director with crisis communications support.
  • Daily distribution of KIPP Texas Public Schools’ media report.
  • Provide media recaps that include the number, reach, and value of negative stories, when needed.
  • Answer emails sent to info@kipptexas.org.

In addition, other projects, workstreams, and priorities as assigned. 

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a focus in Communications, Journalism, or a related field. 
  • 3 years of experience in a related role.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing successful social media strategies and content calendars.
  • Strong understanding of digital analytics and ability to translate data into actionable insights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a portfolio of work showcasing strong writing and content creation abilities.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with media contacts and secure positive media coverage.
  • Experience with digital reputation management and crisis communications support.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and information.
  • Proficiency with social media management platforms and content creation tools.
  • Spanish speaking is preferred, but not required.
