As a Manager, Software Engineering you will lead a Product Engineering squad, responsible for building and maintaining products and experiences that directly impact our students, partners, and internal teams. You will oversee the day-to-day operations of an engineering squad, ensuring the team delivers scalable, high-quality solutions while balancing the needs of a dynamic business environment.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Foster a high-performing, engaged team by providing mentorship, coaching, and clear growth opportunities.
  • Ensure your team(s) are diverse in skills, facilitate access to necessary resources for their development, mitigate single points of failure and help them understand how their contributions fit into the broader goals of Guild.
  • Guide performance management, setting clear expectations, evaluating individual and team outcomes, and addressing personnel concerns proactively.
  • Lead through ambiguity, making informed decisions to adapt to shifting priorities while keeping the team focused.

Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Staff and Principal Engineers to scope and deliver solutions that are scalable and resilient while balancing Guild's business objectives, practical timelines and addressing the ongoing requirements of the Engineering Team.
  • Drive execution and squad accountability, ensuring predictable delivery timelines and well-scoped projects.
  • Align team work with broader engineering and business strategy, ensuring efficient trade-offs and investments.
  • Collaborate with other Engineering Leaders to solve shared challenges and improve efficiency across teams.
  • Facilitate cross-team projects and stakeholder communication, ensuring clear ownership and decision-making.

Technical Leadership

  • Ensure system reliability, security, and performance, proactively addressing risks and guiding best practices.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement, proactively identifying and addressing opportunities for growth.
  • Promote knowledge-sharing and maintain clear, up-to-date documentation.
  • Optimize workflows and minimize distractions, shielding the team from unnecessary context switching.

Required Experience:

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years in a formal people management role, leading high-performing engineering teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and develop engineers across multiple levels, fostering engagement and professional growth.

  • Proven experience leading agile product engineering teams, with a strong track record of delivering high-quality, scalable, and resilient software solutions.

  • Skilled in collaborating cross-functionally with Product Management, Design, and senior technical leaders to align on strategy, scope, and execution.

  • Deep understanding of engineering best practices related to system design, reliability, security, and performance.

  • Experience managing cross-team projects, with strong skills in stakeholder management, project planning, and communication.

  • Strong decision-making abilities in ambiguous, fast-paced environments, with a focus on business value and pragmatic trade-offs.

  • Familiarity with driving a culture of continuous improvement, including process optimization and minimizing distractions for engineering teams.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including clear documentation and knowledge-sharing practices.

We are committed to equal pay for equal work and believe in compensation transparency. This role offers a competitive total compensation package, including a base salary of $144,000 - $211,200 and stock options. Compensation offered will be based on a combination of factors such as experience, competencies, and internal equity.
