Job Description Summary
The Mathematics Peer Academic Advisor supports current and prospective mathematics students by providing peer-to-peer guidance on academic planning, course selection, and campus resources. 

Serving as a knowledgeable student representative of the Mathematics Department, this position assists students in navigating their academic journey while fostering a welcoming and supportive environment that promotes student success and engagement.
Responsibilities
  • Assist students with course registration, academic planning, and course selection within established departmental and university guidelines.
  • Provide information regarding mathematics degree requirements, departmental resources, and campus support services.
  • Maintain accurate student files, records, and advising documentation.
  • Document student interactions and relevant advising information as directed by departmental staff.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with the Head of Faculty, Academic Advising Center staff, faculty advisors, and departmental personnel.
  • Support advising and recruitment initiatives
  • Assist with the preparation of advising materials, presentations, and departmental communications.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus offices and resources when additional support is needed.
  • Represent the Mathematics Department in a professional and positive manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Current Chapman University student in good academic standing.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Interest in mentoring, guiding, and supporting fellow students.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling student information.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Dependable, professional, and able to manage responsibilities effectively.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service and student support.
Desired Qualifications
  • Major or minor in Mathematics, Data Science, Actuarial Science, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with Chapman University’s academic programs, registration processes, and student resources.
  • Previous experience in peer mentoring, tutoring, student leadership, orientation programs, or customer service roles.
  • Comfort speaking with individuals and small groups in both one-on-one and presentation settings.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to navigate questions from diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated involvement in campus organizations, academic programs, or departmental activities.
  • Enthusiasm for sharing the Chapman student experience and supporting student success.
