The Alaska Stable Isotope Facility (ASIF) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) seeks applicants for a term-funded, staff position to lead the use and maintenance of a Multi Collector Plasma Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry (NEPTUNE - multi collector ICPMS) to analyze samples submitted by clients for a broad range of projects. Strontium isotopes are the focus of the lab and prior experience using and applying this isotopic system is needed. This position will involve running and promoting the state-of-the-art MC-ICPMS instrumentation as part of the ASIF, which is a non-profit, analytical research facility (research center) in a dedicated state-of-the-art lab space.
This employee must have advanced knowledge in analytical chemistry and MC-ICPMS techniques (including laser ablation) and ideally using the specific system (Neptune) in ASIF. Must be proficient in general computing software for the purpose of generating both internal and external data reports. Must have the ability to lead/supervise student assistants, lab technicians, and clients. Clients will include PIs, students, staff, post docs and state and federal employees.
We would like this person to come with hands on experience using a laser ablation and solution MC-ICPMS system. Strontium isotopes are the main focus of the ASIF lab and prior experience analyzing strontium isotopes in otoliths, bone teeth, tusks and water would be very beneficial. Prior experience preparing samples for analysis and data reduction and QA,QC will be needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree and two (2) years' research experience at the postgraduate level in a field relevant to the research (e.g. science, geochemistry, chemistry), or an equivalent combination of training and experience. This person MUST have prior hands on experience using a laser ablation and solution MC-ICPMS system - preferably a Neptune.
