Position Summary
The Nursing Retention Coach develops and implements strategies to support student persistence and success within the nursing program. The role addresses academic, social, and financial barriers impacting student achievement; provides individualized and group coaching; and coordinates resources to foster retention and graduation. The Coach leads the Nursing Retention Committee and collaborates with faculty, staff, and college partners to identify and address systemic barriers while promoting a high quality nursing program that meets community workforce needs.

Primary Duties Performed
  • Monitor student progress and proactively intervene with academic and personal support strategies.
  • Meet with students individually and in groups to address learning challenges, financial concerns, and life obstacles.
  • Support students in developing study plans, organization and time management skills, test preparation, and learning strategies tailored to individual needs.
  • Provide referrals to campus and community resources that address social, financial, and personal barriers.
  • Assist students in building critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills to support classroom and clinical success.
  • Identify policies, processes, or procedures that create barriers and collaborate with faculty, staff, and committees to resolve them.
  • Lead the districtwide Nursing Retention Committee, using evidence-based approaches to identify barriers, guide interventions, and assess effectiveness.
  • Work collaboratively with key departments to support nursing student persistence and graduation initiatives.
  • Collect and analyze data to identify student barriers and develop strategies that enhance retention.
  • Participate in professional development and remain current on trends in nursing education and student retention.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Counseling, or a related field (or bachelor’s degree plus two additional years of relevant experience).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant full-time professional experience.
  • Experience working with health care or nursing students in an academic setting preferred.
  • Credentialing as a licensed social worker (LSW) or licensed professional counselor (LPC) a plus.
Working Conditions
  • Professional office and classroom/clinical environments.
  • Frequent interaction with students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Requires travel across campuses and occasional attendance at external meetings.
  • Evening and weekend hours may occasionally be required to meet program and student needs.
  • Position involves handling sensitive or confidential student information.
Physical Requirements:
  • Work is primarily performed in an office, classroom, and clinical setting with extended periods of sitting, standing, and computer use.
  • Occasional walking between buildings and traveling to other campuses is required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in person and electronically.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials up to 10–15 pounds (e.g., laptops, files, instructional materials).
