The Center for Medical Innovation (CMI) is the University of Utah’s medical device incubator and venture studio. We help innovators, entrepreneurs, and startups take bold ideas and turn them into real, market-ready medical technologies to launch into the market. From hands-on programs to in-house prototyping and regulatory support, we’re built to move fast and solve real problems in healthcare.
In early 2026, we’re launching the James LeVoy Sorenson Center for Medical Innovation (SCMI) — a next-gen facility that will supercharge our ability to build, test, and launch even more breakthrough devices, including a state-of-the-art multi-bay surgery training center. More on that here.

The Role
We’re looking for a skilled surgical technician who can manage and run The ASCENT Lab – our surgical training center – and manage our CLIP program which provides clinical observation opportunities for industry partners in the U Health hospital system. You’ll be responsible for preparing equipment, managing supplies, and coordinating training events with industry partners, and coordinating clinical observations within the hospital.
Responsibilities
What You’ll Do
· Prepare supplies/instrumentation and equipment needed for surgical training procedures, ensuring all are working properly. · Set up O.R. tables and bays for each surgical training procedure. · Coordinate all maintenance and repair of surgical equipment. · Procure all necessary materials, supplies, and equipment needed for each training event. · Coordinate with industry partners to establish training event objectives, understanding what equipment and supplies will need to be prepared for the training event. · Serve as the on-site liaison for training events. · Orient visiting training participants to the facility and equipment. · Assist in the development of department goals/objectives, including utilization, capabilities, and budgets for the O.R. training center. · Plan and execute clinical observations for industry partners throughout the U Health hospital system. · Assist in the sales and recruitment for industry partner’s training events. · This position does not provide patient care.


Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Operations Program Manager, II: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

Operations Program Manager, III: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.
