Part Time Software Developer Full Description

JOB SUMMARY
The Internal Insights & Innovation team seeks to hire a Part-Time Software Developer to join our team at the rank of Software Developer 1. Your role will be to develop, maintain, and enhance web applications that support the University's business processes, academic operations, and research initiatives. 
This position is ideal for someone with strong technical skills and a passion for problem-solving. The Web Developer will work closely with our senior applications developer, director, student staff, and partners across the University to build and support high-quality, accessible, and brand-compliant digital experiences. Primary responsibilities will include developing and maintaining web applications using PHP, Laravel, and WordPress, as well as ensuring responsive and accessible front-end designs using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance web applications using PHP, Laravel, and WordPress. 
  • Collaborate with the senior applications developer, directors, and clients to define requirements and implement solutions. 
  • Perform front-end development using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create user-friendly interfaces. 
  • Administer and extend WordPress sites by implementing new themes, plugins, and custom functionality. 
  • Optimize and ensure web applications meet security, performance, and accessibility standards. 
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to best practices for web development. 
  • Assist in managing student developers, delegating tasks as needed. 
  • Conduct usability and accessibility reviews to ensure compliance with Section 508 and WCAG guidelines. 
  • Provide technical support and training to non-technical staff and clients on web applications and CMS usage. 
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging web technologies and best practices to enhance our digital solutions. 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate's degree and four years of related experience OR bachelor's degree and two years of related experience OR six years of related experience.
  • Professional experience developing web applications using PHP and Laravel. 
  • Experience with front-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. 
  • Applied use with Git version control and collaborative development workflows. 
  • Experience demonstrating problem-solving skills and managing multiple projects simultaneously. 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment. 
  • Experience with modern front-end JavaScript frameworks (e.g., Vue, React, or Angular). 
  • Experience with RESTful APIs and integrating third-party services.
  • Knowledge of MySQL or other relational databases.
  • Experience with web accessibility standards and best practices.
  • Communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience mentoring or supervising junior developers.
  • Experience with DevOps practices and deployment workflows.
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a half-time (50% FTE), 12-month, annually renewable position, contingent upon performance, funding, and departmental need. Hybrid telecommuting arrangements are possible for in-state employees. The typical workday will align with normal EST business hours. We offer an industry-competitive salary, including a robust benefits package. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
