Job Summary Peer advisors play a crucial role in the JWS Office of Academic Advising by performing a wide variety of tasks that support the office’s mission. The primary job duties of a JWS Peer Advisor are to assist students with basic advising questions and serve as a resource to connect students to the multiple resources available to them on campus. These responsibilities include: Reception- Provide exceptional customer service while acting as the first point of contact for the JWS Office of Academic Advising. Peer advisors will likely be the first point of contact for students, faculty, and other staff members when calling the office. Peer advisors will need excellent communication skills and be proficient at using office systems to schedule advising appointments. Academics- Peer advisors will need to be willing to learn academic policies and regulations regarding students on the Troy Campus. Peer advisors will be tasked with learning and understanding degree maps for all colleges/departments. They should then be able to use this knowledge to efficiently help students plan a course schedule and answer questions regarding the degree map. The peer advisors with work closely with the Academic Advising team. Peer Advisors should be comfortable greeting and welcoming students to Troy University. This job will require Peer Advisors to interact with students as IMPACT over the summer, fall, and spring sessions. Peer advisors will also need to know and understand the various campus resources that are offered to students. This may also include answering questions about Canvas.
The Peer Advisor will participate in other academic advising components that include but are not limited to: Participating in pop-up advising activities which are held at various times and locations across the Troy Campus Utilize Student Planning and other advising technologies to help students obtain information and plan classes accordingly Teaching students how to navigate advising services, services offered by the JWS Center for Student Success, and other TROY resources as applicable Create publications to market events and announcements regarding advising activities
Minimum Qualifications | Must be a current Troy University student Ability to understand and communicate appropriate professional boundaries with peers Can multi-task and has strong organizational skills Willing to learn degree maps, policies, and procedures at Troy University Ability to value and communicate/work with a diverse population of students and faculty/staff Possesses good written and verbal communication skills Ability to work with confidential information and understands FERPAPunctual, reliable, and persistent Ability to teach peers how to utilize online advising-related resources Confident presentation skills
