Principal Visual Designer (Interaction, UI, Product Design)
We are looking for a Principal Visual Designer with a beautiful product portfolio, demonstrating deep expertise in designing for complex products or systems as well as a high level of craftsmanship and interaction principles for both desktop and mobile UIs. Experience in interaction and systems design is baseline, while experience in AI and voice is a bonus. Your design thinking approach and strategic impact should be articulated through a presentation of 2-3 case studies.
We see Principal Visual Designers as experts in their field, who can raise the visual design bar for the entire product portfolio, ensure efficient and effective product design delivery from a small UX/UI team, and socialize best practices in interaction, visual, and conversational design. While they are individual contributors, they lead by example and mentor more junior designers.
As a Principal Visual Designer, you’ll demonstrate:
- 8+ years of relevant and demonstrable experience in Interaction/UI Design as an individual contributor
- Experience in driving innovation or growth programs that ship complex product suites for B2C or B2B companies (ed tech not required)
- Focus in producing highly crafted and smart UIs, compelling visions/prototypes around emerging tech (e.g., voice, VR, AR, AI), and scalable design systems (AI not required)
- Experience in conducting user research, facilitating workshops and creating prioritization frameworks
- Proficiency in collaborating with product, data, and eng partners, using agile product delivery model
- Impact in creating UX/UI toolkits and standards and advocating best practices in smoother product delivery and governance
About the role
- This position reports into the VP of Product Design in Higher Education across its keystone digital products:
- My Lab Mastery’s (MLM) is the university instructor teaching platform, which includes AI-generated lesson planning, adaptive homework, advanced courseware tools, and gradebooks.
- Pearson+ is the student learning platform, which include eTextbooks, study videos, AI chatbots, robust learning tools like homework, simulators, and quizzes in both desktop and mobile applications.
As the most senior UI designer representing MLM and Pearson+, you will be responsible for:
- Partnering with Product to bring customer-centric product strategies and northstar visions to life.
- Transitioning from compelling MVP prototypes to functional product pilots and real product launches in the market.
- Building trust-based relationships to influence your product, engineering, data, commercial and marketing counterparts, as well as with the other members of the design leadership and peers.
- Advocating for customer-centric design practices and upleveling UX/UI quality standards.
- Facilitates cross-functional workshops and design thinking activities.
- Executing on UI designs via user flows, wireframes, high-fidelity prototypes, and design systems with the support of a small group of UX/UI designers.
- Partnering with engineering to structure, scale, and govern a product design system.
- Ensuring alignment, review, and sign-off over the design direction of the products with product stakeholders, design teams, and subject matter experts.
- Leading concept testing of journeys and features and usability testing of product delivery.
- Involving specialists as needed for UX research, motion graphics/animation, illustration/iconography, design systems, etc.
About the team
- As part of the Higher Ed product team, you will have a 4-in-a-box squad of product, engineering, design, and program leads. As Principal Visual Designer, you may have a UX Design Director counterpart. Beyond your product team, you have a SWAT team of learning science experts, AI experts, sales team, and support team.
- Within the global UX design team, you’ll be paired with talented design peers working in digital, interactive, conversational, and immersive environments to collaborate with you, support alongside your team, and mentor you along your own learning journey.
