Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The mission of the nursing department is to prepare compassionate and caring nurse leaders in health who transform communities.
Primary Purpose of Position
Tutoring serves upper-division nursing students by assisting with academic success strategies. The primary responsibilities of a tutor are to support students (tutees) to become more independent learners, persist in college, and reach their goals. Tutors provide individual and/or group tutoring to students across nursing courses.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Commitment to diversity and inclusion in fulfillment of the university’s mission, knowledgeable of university and pre-professional curriculum requirement; knowledgeable of tutoring practices and principles; attained intermediate proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to read and interpret any pertinent course materials such as syllabi, course/homework instructions or any educational information that will assist in the student’s learning experience. Ability to write daily reports and email correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with students or employees of organization. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and be able to explain/interpret to students and the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in nursing, required. Master’s degree in nursing, preferred or a related field.
Two years of experience working in medical-surgical, critical care nursing and two years of experience teaching nursing education courses

Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation
Requires an unrestricted North Carolina RN License

  • Assess a student’s strengths and weaknesses under guidance from the BSN Academic Enhancement Coordinator and/or the Academic Student Success Coach

  • Explain, model, and offer academic assistance related to the subject or assignment
  • Offer suggestions for more effective studying for or preparing assignments for the course

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  • Require students to participate actively in sessions within the guidelines, policies, and procedures endorsed by NCCU Department of Nursing
  • Complete all required forms and documentation accurately and by deadlines
  • Attend department meetings

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  • Communicate with the BSN Academic Enhancement Coordinator and/or the Academic Success Coach regarding issues, concerns, and suggestions
