Job Description
The Program Assistant for Education and Outreach supports the development and implementation of coastal education, community engagement, and student experiential learning programs at the Virginia Tech Coastal Collaborator (VTCC) in Hampton, Virginia. This position plays a central role in connecting VTCC’s applied coastal resilience work with students, educators, and communities by coordinating programs that translate technical knowledge into accessible, hands-on learning experiences.

The position manages a portfolio of education and outreach programs, including K–12 coastal education, student experiential learning, internship and field placement coordination, and community outreach events. The role also facilitates student engagement in applied resilience initiatives, including work associated with the Resilience Adaptation Feasibility Tool (RAFT), ensuring that students are integrated into real-world implementation efforts.

Working closely with VTCC staff, faculty, students, and external partners—including local governments, community organizations, and school systems—the Program Assistant supports program delivery, organizes activities and events, and strengthens the pipeline connecting education, applied experience, and workforce development in coastal resilience.

Required Qualifications
• Experience in education, outreach, community engagement, or program coordination
• Experience working with students (K–12 and/or undergraduate) in educational or applied settings
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse groups
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in environmental education, coastal resilience, Extension, or related fields
• Experience supporting workshops, community meetings, or outreach programs
• Familiarity with applied coastal work, fieldwork, or environmental data
• Experience working with teachers, school systems, or developing educational materials
• Experience coordinating internships, volunteer programs, or student placements
• Experience in a university, Cooperative Extension, or public-sector environment
