I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The Division for Student Affairs (DSA) cultivates an inclusive community that supports connection, growth, and well-being for every student throughout their GW journey. The Student Affairs team is comprehensive and collaborative, and supports the mission to be academically rigorous and simultaneously student-centered.

Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Family Engagement, the Program Manager, Families is responsible for supporting the work of family engagement at GW within the Division for Student Affairs. The Program Manager for Family Engagement develops and manages family engagement for GW by managing the Family Advisory Council, family engagement events, helping grow GW family affinity through programming efforts. In addition, the Program Manager also supports special initiatives of the Division for Student Affairs and works very closely with Orientation and Class Year Programs.

The Program Manager plays a pivotal role in GW family engagement and supporting student transition, student success, student engagement, student belonging, retention, and persistence of first-year and transfer students through research and data-based decision making. They are responsible for the following:

Family Engagement
  • Develop and oversee the management of the Family Advisory Council (FAC).
  • Responsible for managing both Fall and Spring FAC meetings including all logistics from invitation to execution.
  • Manage communications and support for FAC families, including helping families with concerns, responding to emails, directing messages, and providing families with information and referrals to resources.
  • Provide event management support for events that foster connection, enhance the sense of belonging, and accelerate onboarding for GW families. Events to include: New Families Orientation in cooperation with Orientation and Class Year Programs, Alumni & Families Weekend Support, and spring semester engagement opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with University Advancement to support Summer Welcomes and other family engagement efforts to support student success.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the Family Engagement program at GW.

Administrative Support for the Division for Student Affairs
  • Work closely with Divisional leadership to cultivate and manage strategic partnerships, including sponsorships (both internal to GW and external community partners) to support the Division for Student Affairs.
  • Participate in Division for Student Affairs and University-wide initiatives, committees, or projects as assigned and as related to the Division for Student Affairs mission.
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners including admissions, University Advancement, academic affairs, athletics, campus living and residential education, dining, international services, events and venues, and student success.

Other duties
  • Stay current on best practices in higher education and student development as it relates to orientation, transition, and retention efforts, family engagement, and family giving through participation in professional associations including the Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention in Higher Education (NODA), the Association of Higher Education Parent/Family Program Professionals (AHEPPP) and the Parent Giving Conference.

The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. Typical duties often are administrative in nature including tasks that are routine, and under general or limited supervision of more senior personnel within the department or program.

The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC with flexibility to work remotely. This position requires occasional weekend and after hours work.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Experience to include College Student Personnel, Student Affairs, Counseling or other related field.
  • Professional experience in admissions, orientation, student services or higher education.
  • Excellent communication skills, including excellent written, public speaking, interpersonal and customer engagement.
  • Excellent interpersonal, diplomatic, and communication skills necessary to develop successful working relationships with diverse members of the University community and external constituents.
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, including flexibility and adaptability.
  • Significant programming experience, including the management of large-scale events.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues of diversity and inclusion; demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in promoting respect and appreciation for diversity and inclusion among students and families.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of first-year and transfer students and their families and how to best program, serve, and communicate with these constituent groups.
  • Proven ability to prioritize work appropriately and adapt easily to changing priorities as well as work independently on multiple tasks and deal effectively with conflicting priorities.
  • Proficiency with software and document sharing tools such as Google Docs, Box, Microsoft Office Software, etc..
