Research IT Data Analyst Full Description

Job Description

The Research IT Data Analyst is a key member of the team providing research administrative data support for the Office of Research and Innovation and the university by designing and delivering high-quality reporting and dashboards, developing queries, preparing and validating data, and monitoring data quality. The position also contributes to documentation, training, and continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring consistent, reliable data and metrics across the university.

Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Data Analytics, the role will collaborate with data stewards and stakeholders to standardize data definitions and metrics across systems and units, support departmental and institutional data needs, and maintain accurate documentation. Core duties include documenting existing data assets, reports, and dashboards; designing and automating routine datasets, reports, and dashboards; developing new tools and metrics; training end users in self-service data platforms; managing data access; responding to user requests; and performing ongoing data quality control and operational reporting tasks.

Successful candidates will be able to manage multiple concurrent and ad hoc projects, demonstrate strong data mining and root-cause analysis skills, and communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.

This position is eligible for hybrid or full remote. The work arrangement will be confirmed upon hire, and will require periodic travel to the Blacksburg campus for collaboration and business purposes.

Required Qualifications

-Must be US Citizen due to Export Controls.
-Related degree or equivalent training/experience in Data Analytics or Data Science field/discipline, or related certifications.
-Experience with query, analytics or data modeling tools and/or reporting/dashboarding platforms.
-Experience with relational databases, including developing complex SQL queries in systems such as MySQL and Oracle.
-Demonstrated experience in data manipulation and/or analysis, report and dashboard development, and technical documentation.
-Course work or equivalent experience in data ethics, data structures, algorithm development, and/or database management.
-Examples of problem solving, trouble-shooting, communication, and/or data modeling / visualization skills or projects.

Preferred Qualifications

-Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Statistics, or a closely related field.
-Uses emerging tools effectively to accelerate complex SQL and analysis, and shows a clear commitment to continuous learning.
-Experience with enterprise reporting and analytics platforms such as Ellucian Banner, Snowflake, and MicroStrategy (or other data visualization or business intelligence tools such as PowerBI and Tableau).
-Experience with programming languages such as Python, R, Java, or similar, with a focus on data processing, modeling, and predictive analytics.
-Experience with delivering in-person or remote training on data concepts, queries, metrics, reporting tools, and dashboards.
