The role works in the university's Technology Transfer Office, reporting to its director, and helps MSU researchers identify, protect, and license intellectual property to industry so that research reaches real-world use. The manager works with a high degree of autonomy, particularly on engineering, physics, and software technologies.

Highlights
  • Identify and evaluate MSU technologies with commercial and licensing potential, soliciting IP disclosures from researchers and working with the TTO IP Manager to meet patent filing and prosecution deadlines.
  • Evaluate patent landscapes, competitive IP, and technology market opportunities, and select the most promising technologies to license to companies.
  • Create one-page technical marketing summaries and research high-potential industry customers, then reach out by email, phone, LinkedIn, and conferences to present licensing and research collaboration opportunities.
  • Help MSU startups and licensee companies with customer discovery, market research, and technology commercialization plans.
  • Draft, negotiate, and track Licensing, Research Collaboration, Inter-Institutional, and Sponsored Research Agreements, communicating directly with federal, state, and private sponsors.
  • Maintain TTO database records and assist with TTO communications, including website and newsletter materials, with occasional travel to industry conferences and meetings with federal sponsors.
  • Hold a master's degree in engineering, physics, or a relevant field, or equivalent education and experience, with at least five years in a technology-driven company, not counting time in academia, research institutes, or nonprofits.
  • Show an understanding of intellectual property, particularly patents, and experience moving technology from R&D to the marketplace.
  • A PhD, ten years in a technology-driven company, deeptech startup experience, IP licensing and contract negotiation expertise, and knowledge of the Bayh-Dole Act and software technologies are preferred.
  • Pay range of $105,000 to $125,000 annually, working on site in Bozeman, Montana.
