Job Summary 
The Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) supports a broad range of faculty researchers, data scientists, clinical coordinators, and informaticists. This position will provide support for investigator-initiated projects and core CTSI operational development, requiring a broad range of software solutions. Projects range from IoT integration, data transformation and integration, web application development, user interface implementation, application integration, and service and application deployment automation. This position requires flexibility and a willingness to grow into new technologies and expand your comfort zone. You’ll work with new emerging technologies and coordinate with cross-functional teams to lead projects and collaborate with other engineers. This position allows you to broaden your skills, sharpen what you have, and make a meaningful impact to real-world projects, helping the scientist and research participant community.

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) serves as an academic home for clinical and translational research, developing innovative health services and training a new generation of investigators. Four foundations of discovery compose the institute: Cores and Services, Education and Training, Clinical Research Support Office, and Administration, and these foundations provide support for T1 to T4 research.

Utah CTSI has produced leading investigators with several NIH grants awarded for their various “bench-to-bedside” areas of research and partners with other flagship institutions to contribute published works and clinical success.

Responsibilities  | Software Development Engineer, IV Design, program, build, deploy, and maintain software applications and systems such as databases, cloud, or operating systems. Analyze and modify existing software as well as design, construct, and test end-user applications that meet user needs. Participate in the full development life cycle, including requirements analysis and design. Write technical specifications based on conceptual design and stated business requirements. Support, maintain, and document software functionality. Identify and evaluate new technologies for implementation. Analyze code to find causes of errors and revise programs as needed. Consult with end user to prototype, refine, test, and debug programs to meet needs. Recognized as a subject matter expert and advanced individual contributor professional. Requires a specialized skill set. Conducts highly complex work, unsupervised and with extensive latitude for independent judgment. Help implement new applications in Java, Clojure, JavaScript, PHP, Python, or Go. Collaborate with the other engineering staff to build out applications and infrastructure for researchers Manage and implement deployment and automation platforms Implement data transformation and migration pipelines Provide user interface design support, design, and implementation Support implementation and integration of core CTSI informatics systems: REDCap, OpenSpecimen, and custom solutions. Lead project designs and implementations with other developers in the engineering group.

Minimum Qualifications  | EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Software Development Engineer, IV: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 8 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences  | Capable of working effectively in an agile environment with others Experience with JavaScript, Python, Go or other server-side scripting languages Front-end web development concepts including calling and testing APIs and implementations such as swagger and JSON/XML serialization. Full stack web development and deployment of modern application using Vue.js, React or related frameworks. Candidate should have hands on experience in UI components implementations Strong knowledge of SQL and some exposure to ETL technologies. Experience working with data transformations and message transformations using platforms such as Node-RED. Experience with event driven architectures or message queues Knowledge of containerization and deployment techniques using Docker, Podman or Kubernetes Experience with application integration using middleware tiers and REST API integration Working knowledge of Linux
