Overview

Build the Future
At McGraw Hill, we create best-in-class, next-generation learning experiences that are used by millions of students and educators worldwide every day. We design intuitive and effective tools that maximize teachers’ time and students’ learning. And we do all of this in a supportive and collaborative environment where we work alongside brilliant colleagues, touch lives around the world, see the difference our hard work makes, and continue on our own paths of lifelong learning.

How can you make an impact?

The Director of Medical Education is Global Professional's internal medical authority, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of student-facing content and keeping that content aligned with faculty and departmental needs. This role provides medical education standards across the medical product suite and the Comprehensive Medical Ontology (CMO), manages a contracted physician faculty network, and partners with product and content teams by taking commercial feedback and helping us shape our overall medical education product strategy. This position will manage two other internal subject matter experts.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

What You'll Do:

Contracted Physician Faculty Network
  • Recruit, vet, train, and manage a network of contracted physician and clinician subject matter experts across relevant medical specialties and writing expertise (assessment writers vs content creators, for example).
  • Develop onboarding materials, contributor guidelines, and quality benchmarks that ensure consistent output across the SME network.
  • Assess contributor performance and maintain a pipeline of qualified replacements to ensure continuity.

Cross-functional Collaboration & Strategic Input

  • Partner with product and content teams on content roadmap decisions, gap analyses, and new product development.
  • Provide medical subject matter input to marketing and customer success teams on an as-needed basis; not a primary commercial responsibility. (see below option)
  • Partner with the Lead Medical Education Consultant to ensure that input from marketing, customer research, and customer success teams is effectively coordinated with the product and content teams
  • Participate in strategic planning for product modifications, sunset decisions, and new content initiatives.

Medical Content Accuracy and Quality Control
  • Serve as chief subject matter expert (SME) for MHP's Comprehensive Medical Ontology — the taxonomy to which all learning resources across the portfolio are tagged.
  • Oversee systematic medical accuracy review for Global Professional medical content, setting standards for SME review across our corpus.

What You Bring:

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO; board certified in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or a closely related specialty
  • Minimum 8-10 years of teaching experience at an accredited medical school or graduate medical education program
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing USMLE-style (Step 1/Step 2 CK) assessment items
  • Proven ability to manage and quality-control medical content at scale
  • Familiarity with USMLE blueprint structure, exam construction standards, and clinical vignette pedagogy
  • Experience in the use of AI in the development of education content as well as its usage by student and faculty.
  • Strong medical and scientific writing fluency

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing contracted faculty or distributed SME networks
  • Familiarity with online curriculum design (synchronous and asynchronous)
  • Experience in a corporate, publishing, or entrepreneurial environment
  • Familiarity with LCME/COCA accreditation frameworks

Key Competencies:

  • Medical authority and editorial judgment — can make and defend content decisions under ambiguity
  • Organizational rigor — manages multiple concurrent workflows, deadlines, and contributor relationships
  • Collaborative mindset — works effectively across editorial, product, technology, and commercial teams without scope creep in either direction
  • Strategic perspective — understands how content quality decisions affect product positioning and institutional adoption
  • Remote work effectiveness — self-directed, communicative, and accountable in a distributed environment
