At the heart of our business is a unique network of experts and innovators who share their knowledge through us. Everything we do is to help professionals from a variety of fields learn best practices and discover emerging trends that will shape the future of the tech industry.

Our customers are hungry to build the innovations that propel the world forward. And we help you do just that.

Diversity
At O’Reilly, we believe that true innovation depends on hearing from, and listening to, people with a variety of perspectives. We want our whole organization to recognize, include, and encourage people of all races, ethnicities, genders, ages, abilities, religions, sexual orientations, and professional roles.

About the Team
The Product Design team at O'Reilly is part of our larger Product organization, which supports the strategic execution of our business goals. We design experiences that fulfill our mission to "change the world by sharing the knowledge of innovators." The team is currently on a mission to elevate our design practice and define standards for what design can accomplish. We focus on the complete user experience—from how someone discovers content to helping them to apply what they've learned. You'll join a team that values strategic thinking, thoughtful execution, obsessing over details, and getting things right without making a fuss about it.

About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Product Design, you'll work as a full-spectrum product designer who understands that great design solves real problems efficiently and elegantly. You'll need to grasp O'Reilly's unique ecosystem—from how we collaborate with editorial teams to the technical constraints of our platform—and design solutions that work within those realities while pushing them forward.

This role requires someone who can drop into any design challenge, quickly understand what stage it's in and what it needs next, and execute accordingly. You'll help define what excellent design feels and looks like for our team while shipping work that directly impacts millions of learners and the companies they work for.

Salary Range: $140,000 - $160,000

What You’ll Do
  • Make complex things simple: Transform O'Reilly's intricate learning ecosystem into intuitive experiences that feel effortless to use
  • Design with conviction and pragmatism: Know when to push for the ideal solution and when to ship something good that solves the immediate problem
  • Build on what works, improve what doesn't: Recognize existing patterns and extend them intelligently rather than reinventing from scratch
  • Ship work that matters: Whether you're leading a project from concept or picking up existing work, take ownership of ensuring your designs solve real problems for real people through thoughtful, empathetic design
  • Elevate the practice: Model what thoughtful design work looks like and help the team grow through example
  • Work across the full spectrum: Move fluidly from strategic thinking to pixel-perfect execution, matching your effort to what the problem actually needs

What You’ll Have

Required:
  • 7+ years of product design experience with a portfolio showing clear problem-solving thinking and meaningful outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to work in complex product environments with multiple stakeholders and user types
  • Experience shipping products that people actually use at scale, with evidence of business impact
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to communicate design decisions clearly without jargon
  • Understanding of when to be systematic and when to be creative, and the judgment to apply either approach effectively
  • Proven track record of autonomous work—you can own problems from definition through delivery
  • Proficiency with tools and methods including Figma, Google Workspace, reporting tools like Amplitude and Google Analytics, Slack, and Jira

Include the following with your application:
  • A link to your portfolio demonstrating your problem-solving process and real-world impact, not just visual artifacts

Preferred:
  • Experience in learning and education products
  • Background working with editorial or content creation workflows
  • Understanding of enterprise software challenges and multi-user environments
  • Experience with design systems and scalable component approaches
  • Experience with design for the use of LLMs supporting interactions
