Job Summary/Basic Function | The STEM Specialist is responsible to help low-income and/or future first-generation college students complete high school and ensure they are academically ready for college. The STEM Specialist monitors coursework, grades and test scores, mentors, tutors, and instructs students in improving necessary skills for high school and post-secondary education completion. Sets up and supervises community service, enrichment activities, and college tours. Assists College Skills Specialist and Program Director in planning and implementing a six-week residential summer program.
Required Qualifications | Required: Bachelor’s degree in education, science, math, technology, engineering, social work, counseling, or pertinent academic discipline. Experience working with youth in an educational setting/environment. A current valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is a condition of employment.
Preferred Qualifications | Preferred: Experience with Upward Bound and/or other TRIO programs. Demonstrated ability to relate to, and successfully work with, underrepresented junior high and high school students, college-age students, parents, school personnel, university faculty/staff and community partners. Demonstrated understanding of the educational needs and concerns of first-generation college students and students from low-income backgrounds. Possess an appreciation for cultural and individual differences. Working knowledge and experience with social media applications and computer software programs. A basic knowledge of STEM subject matter. Experience in curriculum development.
