General Information:
The Center for Global Engagement (CGE) is seeking a Study Abroad Advisor to support students throughout all phases of the study abroad experience, including pre-application advising, pre-departure preparation, and post-program re-entry. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Study Abroad Advising and Student Support, this part-time role (20–30 hours/week, not to exceed 1500 hours/calendar year) works in close partnership with the study abroad programs team and advising staff to deliver comprehensive advising and support student engagement with program offerings. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and diverse international education environment. CGE and the university seeks individuals who are dedicated to fostering global understanding and engagement.

Location: In-person position in Harrisonburg, VA
Reports to: Assistant Director of Study Abroad Advising and Student Support
Work Schedule: 20–30 hours per week (not to exceed 1500 hours per calendar year), flexible scheduling during regular business hours
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Advise students and their families on JMU study abroad program options, application processes, scholarships, and general program logistics through one-on-one meetings, email correspondence, events, and website content management.

•Manage an advising portfolio of JMU-administered programs by serving as a primary point of contact for program directors, prospective applicants, and enrolled participants, ensuring consistent and accurate communication.

•Represent the study abroad team at campus events, orientations, and outreach initiatives to educate and inform current and prospective students about study abroad opportunities.

•Support student pre-departure processes, including orientations, visa and passport guidance, insurance enrollment, course registration, and risk management coordination.

•Contribute to the development and implementation of re-entry programming to support student learning and continued engagement after returning from abroad.
 
Qualifications:
•Demonstrated experience with student advising, ideally within international education
•Strong written and verbal communication skills
•Excellent organizational and time management abilities; capable of balancing multiple tasks
•Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced setting
•Experience living, working, or studying abroad
•Knowledge of intercultural communication practices
