Job Summary
The Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences seeks an Information Technology Specialist to join a high-performing team of IT professionals dedicated to supporting faculty, staff, and students. This position supports the Department of Mathematics and the broader College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, located on the University of Utah campus at President’s Circle.
The Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences IT team is focused on streamlining operations and standardizing exceptional service across the college and campus. This role offers the opportunity to work within a collaborative, dynamic team led by an Associate Director of IT.
The successful candidate will perform duties across multiple areas of information technology, including computer hardware, server software, networking, end-user support, data security, and related IT infrastructure functions, with a primary focus on Linux-based systems and additional support for macOS and Windows environments.

This position manages a significant number of Linux servers and desktops. Emphasis will be placed on rebuilding infrastructure to serve the Colleges of Science research and teaching needs while complying with University security requirements and complimenting other college compute resources.

This position requires the successful candidate to work a full schedule on premises.

Systems / Network Administrators
Support the organization’s computer systems and network environment. Install, configure, and support the organization’s networks (e.g., LAN, WAN). Maintain all firewalls, switch stacks, switches, and routers as well as network hardware. Ensure the availability and optimal performance of the network and perform day-to-day maintenance and management of network devices. Perform application administration activities such as creating, modifying, and deleting users, optimizing remote access, and security access for messaging systems, databases, and web applications. Support, troubleshoot, and provide resolution for application, hardware, and communication problems. Schedule upgrades and collaborate with engineers on network / system optimization. Maintain operating efficiency and stability, ensure the security and integrity of all systems and data, and respond to outages and other issues. Coordinate with department leadership to plan, design, and schedule the release of all software, hardware, or operating system updates. Develop and enhance processes and technical documentation, create back-up procedures, test plans, and reports.

Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and manage end-to-end provisioning workflows for Linux-based bare-metal and virtual machines using PXE/iPXE, DHCP, TFTP, and HTTP services.
  • Automate administrative tasks and deployment processes using scripting, MDMs and configuration management tools (Ansible, Tanium, Jamf).
  • Install, configure and manage systems like the Ubuntu Landscape Server to automate Linux systems patching and updates.
  • Design, configure, and manage ZFS pools, filesystems and snapshots for various workloads including, file shares (NFS/SMB), and virtualized environments. Experience with ZFS and NFS required.
  • Proactively monitor system performance, analyze logs, and perform complex troubleshooting and root cause analysis for hardware, software, and network issues.
  • Implement and maintain robust security measures, including host firewalls, user access controls, and regular security audits, to protect sensitive data and comply with state and university standards.
  • Configure and maintain Linux virtualization platforms and manage VMs within those environment. Experience with a mix of oVirt, Proxmox, KVM/QEMU required.
  • Install configure and manage math related software and math problem servers.
  • Work with IT professionals from other departments to consolidate and coordinate efforts resulting in better resource allocation, standardized methods and improved services for faculty staff and students.
  • Manage endpoint security solutions: EDR, antivirus, and DLP systems.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, resolve and report systems issues.
  • Respond to user requests for system support and upgrades.
  • Perform scheduled network tasks, software and systems updates, manage ZFS snapshots and backups, and provide internet and Intranet user support.
  • Conduct analysis, including planning, designing, and evaluating a variety of information technology tools.
  • Participate in other IT projects to drive technological efficiencies.

Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
