Systems Professional IV - V Full Description

General Summary: 
Reporting to the Director of Research Computing, we are seeking a Linux systems administrator within the “Research Computing Systems Professional” job family series of positions (levels 1 through 5). These are systems administrators who are responsible for implementing and maintaining IT systems supporting research activities. The Systems Professional series is a five-level series that supports research facilitation, research data management, high performance computing, high throughput computing, hosting, and other types of systems administration. Currently seeking applications for a Research Computing Senior Systems Engineer (Systems  Professional IV) or Research Computing Systems Architect (Systems Professional V).

  • Research Computing Systems Architect (Systems Professional V)
 
Examples of Duties: 
RC Senior Systems Engineer
  • Lead the planning, building, and configuration of RC systems, including a local HPC cluster, standalone compute and/or GPU systems, Linux workstations and other supporting systems.
  • Set standards for monitoring and maintaining the health and integrity of RC systems
  • Upgrading and patching of RC systems
  • Design and implement robust and secure IT solutions supporting research, including systems that meet data compliance standards (HIPAA, NIST 800-171, CIS Controls, etc.)
  • Define and track performance metrics to ensure efficient use of resources
  • Support and collaborate with researchers and other key IT partners (e.g. Network, Security, Operations, and Client Services)
  • Build and maintain relationships with external vendor technicians and engineers
  • Collaborate with and may provide leadership to other personnel within the RC ecosystem
  • Regularly contribute best practices documentation and knowledge transfer
  • May supervise junior staff or student employees
  • Lead trainings on RC resources, including specific software or tools
  • Provide in-depth consultation with researchers through regular engagements
 
RC Systems Architect
  • Provide expert operational knowledge of RC systems, including a local HPC cluster, standalone compute and/or GPU systems, Linux workstations, and other supporting systems.
  • Develop next generation RC architectures to address compute and data intensive research problems
  • Develop enhancements to maintain integrity of RC systems
  • Collaborate with domain researchers regularly and other key IT partners (e.g. Network, Security, Operations, and Client Services) to address future needs
  • Leads and participates with Systems Engineers within the national RC ecosystem
  • Lead trainings on HPC Cluster use, Bash scripting, Python, or other domain specific applications or tools
  • Develop next generation workflows or debug complex issues with a deep understanding of cutting-edge technology, software, or tools
 
Qualifications: 
RC Senior Systems Engineer
  • Minimum of 9 years’ relevant post-secondary education or relevant work experience, including a combination of these two
  • Broad knowledge of deployment and administration of Linux based RC systems (e.g. HPC Clusters, storage, compute, GPUs, virtualization, networking, database, etc.)
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, customer service mindset, and ability to act as trusted advisor
  • Working Knowledge of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, or other research domains
  • Familiarity with Linux, Windows, Mac, and other common endpoint devices.
 
RC Systems Architect
  • Minimum of 11 years’ relevant post-secondary education or relevant work experience, including a combination of these two
  • Broad knowledge of deployment and administration of Linux based RC systems (e.g. HPC Clusters, storage, compute, GPUs, virtualization, networking, database, etc.)
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, customer service mindset, and ability to act as trusted advisor
  • Strong Working knowledge of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, or other research domains.
  • Ability to lead development of specific technologies
  • Familiarity with Linux, Windows, Mac, and other common endpoint devices.
