Job Description
Central Virginia Community College is located in Lynchburg, Virginia, in view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. CVCC is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students in occupational/technical programs and university-parallel/college transfer programs.
The goal of the TRIO SSS Navigator is to serve students by providing a high touch, high quality involvement through application for admission, financial aid, enrollment, and their academic and/or personal goals. The Navigator will serve students who are from low-income, first-generation, and/or students with disabilities. The Navigator will support outreach efforts, programs, and services that fulfill the strategic goals of the College’s mission and the objectives set forth by the U.S. Department of Education, which are outlined in the TRIO SSS grant.
Serves as primary point of contact to prospective and new students qualifying for the CVCC TRIO Program through individual and/or group sessions. The TRIO SSS Navigator is responsible for helping increase program participants’ retention and graduation rates. Helps students determine college readiness, guides students into a college curriculum, and determines, with the student, the most appropriate course of study. Works closely with the academic divisions, faculty, and other student services personnel to respond effectively to students’ needs, to intervene in matters relative to the curriculum determinations and changes. Refers students to appropriate college personnel and/or community social service agencies when needed. Promotes the college before internal constituencies to assist with creating program visibility and fostering community relationships. Supports the strategic goal of improving student retention and achievement of educational goals through exemplary student services, expansive programs, and quality instruction.This individual will assist the Director with the Annual Performance Report for the U.S. Department of Education as well as other reporting requirements. This is a full-time position that is contingent upon grant funding.
Special Assignments | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications | Ability to use Microsoft Office, Zoom, Teams, and other communication programs, and experience dealing with the public and providing services to a diverse population is required. Experience that exhibits strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks in a stressful environment, and commitment to see projects through to completion. Experience in a helping profession and/or being from a population typically underserved in higher education and/or having overcome obstacles similar to first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities.Strong interpersonal and written communication skills and the ability to correspond with program participants and other campus offices frequently. Ability to manage a large caseload of students and maintain database for recording participant records and participation notes.
Additional Considerations | Master’s degree, experience advising students in a higher education setting.
Experience developing, planning, and facilitating educational workshops.
