| Job Summary | TheTRIOUpward Bound Program at the University of Utah is seeking talented, experienced Tutors to assist in the delivery of an after-school tutoring program to high school students between grades 9 and 12, within the Salt Lake and Granite School Districts. TheTRIOUpward Bound Program helps both struggling and gifted students reach their full potential by supplementing the instruction they receive in class and guiding them toward study practices and aides that can help them excel. Tutors work with individual students one-on-one and occasionally organize group activities for students who are studying the same material. TheTRIOUpward Bound team offers compassionate, motivating assistance to students, and tutors are expected to do the same. |
| Responsibilities | • Meet students at their high school and on campus to review homework assignments in the applicable subject area • Review recent homework assignments and test scores, then work through problems or questions that the student did not answer correctly • Give short presentations on monthly theme, lead activities related to theme, and lead discussions with students on the theme • Employ proven study aides to prepare for upcoming tests and quizzes • Complete a short debrief form after 1-1 tutoring with students to track progress. • Assist with management of classroom space at high schools • Promote a supportive environment for all positive role models and representative of theTRIOoffice. * Candidate needs to have transportation to-from high schools |
| Minimum Qualifications | High School Diploma, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are required. The incumbent will be required to pass a Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Background check Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description. |
| Preferences | • Prefrence given to those in STEM majors • Must be a responsible individual with good interpersonal skills who enjoys working with students from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds • Be willing to commit 15 hours per week (Including some Saturday mornings) • Have reliable transportation and be willing to transport students in University vehicles if necessary, take and pass state driving exam • Ability to pass a background check · Ability to develop positive rapport with students |
