Job Summary  | Bowdoin College’s Upward Bound/TRIO programs are grant-funded through the US Department of Education and designed to provide fundamental pre-college support to income eligible participants from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. Bowdoin College Upward Bound serves 14 target high school schools in two Maine regions – Washington County and Mid-Maine with the ultimate goal of ensuring students are successful in their pursuit and completion of higher education.​

The UB Advisor provides one-on-one school-based academic, personal, career and college counseling to area students as well as small and large group activities and training/oversight of area tutors and mentors. The UB Advisor works closely with target school staff and families in Washington County to identify and recruit eligible area students as well as plan and implement regional outreach activities including: tutoring, college visits, mentoring, job shadows and cultural enrichment. This position is year-round and requires being present on Bowdoin College Campus for the summer program. The Upward Bound Program at Bowdoin College is grant-funded through the U.S Department of Education and this position is contingent on continued grant funding.

COMPENSATION:The hourly range for this position is expected to be: $24.45 –$25.75/per hour (This position is eligible for overtime and shift/weekend differential). Compensation is based on skills and experience.

Education/Skills Requirements  | Required: Associates or vocational/technical school degree in a relevant field Effective writing and verbal communications skills Ability to present effectively to small and large groups and to work productively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Proficient computer skills including use of social media, presentation, database and spreadsheet software. Must be able to work well both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. A valid Maine driver’s license and the ability to comply with the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy is required. Ability to regularly work and travel throughout Maine. 

Preferred:Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents  | Required: ​​Minimum of 2 years of experience working in education or youth development. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality. 
Preferred: ​Prior experience working with families with low income. Prior experience with advising financial aid and college admissions process. ​Demonstrated ability to coordinate group activities and to provide supervision to assigned staff. ​Familiarity with the region and area public school systems.

Standard Work Days and Hours  | This is an full-time, year round position (1.00 FTE). Typical school day is 7:30 am – 4:00 pm. Office days are 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. The summer schedule varies to meet operational needs and may include some weekends and evenings. Summer schedule requires being present on Bowdoin Campus in Brunswick for the residential summer program. Schedule will vary considerably according to target high school schedules and program activities. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required. This position will travel frequently throughout Washington County and be remote or campus-based depending on the candidate’s location.
