General Description:
The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer (CAO) provides visionary, strategic, and operational leadership for NOVA’s academic enterprise, ensuring that programs and services advance the College’s mission, values, and commitment to inclusion, excellence, and student success.
 
This position is responsible for the quality, consistency, and integrity of all academic programs across NOVA’s six campuses, NOVA Online, concurrent enrollment high schools, and other instructional sites. In collaboration with faculty, deans, and campus provosts, the Vice President and CAO plans, develops, implements, and evaluates NOVA’s transfer and technical education curricula. The role also oversees the design and delivery of aresponsive, unified academic schedule that meets the needs of NOVA’s diverse student population and supports the College’s strategic enrollment goals.
 
The Vice President and CAO directs the development and continuous improvement of academic services, practices, and policies that support student success, advance equity, and anticipate changes in the higher education landscape. The position also leads the cultivation and sustainability of secondary and university partnerships, while collaborating closely with the Vice President for Strategy, Research and Workforce Innovation to ensure alignment between NOVA’s technical education programs and regional workforce needs. As a member of the President’s Administrative Council, the Vice President/CAO works closely with colleagues across the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and reports directly to the President.
 
Duties and Tasks:

1. Chief Academic Officer Role a. Serve as the College’s Chief Academic Officer, advising the President on all aspects of academic programs and college-wide academic planning and implementation.b. Provide strategic and operational leadership for NOVA’s instructional programs and courses, ensuring consistent quality and alignment with the College’s mission, values, and commitment to providing exceptional learning experiences.c. Engage shared governance bodies as appropriate to ensure inclusive and effective decision-making.d. Prioritize consistent and clear communications on all Academic Affairs actions and operations.
2. Academic Policy, Governance, and Compliancea. Recommend and administer academic policies, procedures, and mandates, working collaboratively within NOVA’s shared governance structures.b. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of policies, laws, codes, regulations, and pending legislation related to academic programs; ensure compliance with federal, state, VCCS, and College requirements.c. Provide oversight for NOVA’s accreditation activities and ensure accurate records and timely reporting.
3. Curriculum and Program Developmenta. Collaborate with Provosts, Vice President for Strategy, Research and Workforce Innovation, College Senate, and academic departments to coordinate periodic program reviews and curriculum development.b. Ensure programs are effective, relevant, responsive, and continuously improving to meet student, workforce, and community needs.c. Provide strategic oversight for faculty development through the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence.
4. Student Success and Partnershipsa. Work with the President, Administrative Council, and key stakeholders to improve NOVA’s performance indicators related to student success.b. Provide leadership and oversight for high school dual enrollment programs, maintaining strong partnerships with local school districts and leaders.c. Provide leadership and oversight for articulation agreements with other colleges and universities, initiating, updating, and sunsetting agreements as needed.d. Collaborate with the Vice President for Student Affairs on enrollment management and student services to align academic offerings with student success initiatives.
5. Academic Operationsa. Provide strategic leadership and oversight for NOVA Online and High School Dual Enrollment.b. Supervise the development and timely publication of the College catalog and academic schedule, ensuring accuracy and compliance.c. Represent Academic Affairs and the College on boards, advisory committees, and VCCS and State Council committees.d. Regularly solicit updates and input from faculty and staff on College decisions by engaging shared governance.
e. Make regular requests from employees for updates and input on college decisions and share feedback with supervisors for inclusion in the NOVA Brief.
6. Supervision and Leadership Developmenta. Supervise, evaluate, and support the performance of assigned staff.b. Participate in orientation, training, development, and performance management of staff in accordance with College policies.
Special Assignments  | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Required Qualifications: Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited college or university. Significant experience with progressively responsible academic administrative leadership in a community college and/or university setting. Demonstrated proficiency in using data, evidence, and analysis to inform decision- making. Several years of full-time teaching experience in a credit-bearing postsecondary curriculum. Strong understanding of, and commitment to, the community college mission. Proven ability to work with diverse stakeholders to achieve consensus.

Experience in developing partnerships between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. Experience with strategic planning, academic program review, and institutional effectiveness. Demonstrated support for faculty and staff development, mentoring, and evaluation. Experience building collaborative partnerships with business, industry, and educational institutions. Familiarity with large, complex, multi-campus community colleges or higher education systems.
