Technical Instructional Designer

The Technical Instructional Designer leads the development and delivery of interactive learning experiences through the O’Reilly learning platform, working closely with talent and internal stakeholders to ensure quality in line with O’Reilly’s standards. Responsibilities include applying a combination of instructional design, technical troubleshooting, project management, and relationship management to develop interactive content for our learning platform. The Technical Instructional Designer reports to the Director of Content Development.

As part of the team you will be responsible for the development and continuous improvement of O'Reilly's interactive learning programs and products, including:
  • interactive scenarios and challenges
  • quizzes
  • Jupyter notebooks
  • interactive courses
  • live online training

  • Work closely with subject matter experts (talent), in consultation with editors, to develop new products, as needed to fulfill the editorial strategy. This requires critical reviews of learning materials, managing and resolving technical questions.
  • Collaborate with product, engineering, and tools to identify and resolve technical issues, communicating feedback constructively, and following up with talent and others to ensure projects are completed on time.
  • Develop expertise in the product types above, fielding inquiries about format, best practices, and technical constraints of each. 
  • Train new talent on interactive content development pedagogy and technical requirements.
  • Manage the pipeline of projects, track development status of each, and provide weekly reporting to the Director and others within the organization as needed.
  • Effectively communicate user feedback, insights and recommendations to editors and talent with an eye towards continuous improvement of the program as measured by engagement and usage of the content.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and propose and implement solutions to improve workflows for all constituents, including production, editorial product, and other internal teams.
  • Lead periodic training sessions for new talent, onboarding them to our best practices for each product type, as well as any editorial considerations specific to their subject areas.
  • Work with Product and other internal teams to provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, use of assessments, and online interactive activities.

  • Proficiency with a range of common tools and technologies, such as command-line interfaces, version control, web development, and streaming audio and video, file types, and formats.
  • Working knowledge of Git, markup files: JSON, YAML, or markdown, and Command Line/Shell-Scripting (bash, zsh, etc.). Familiarity with Python preferred.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with multiple constituencies in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and solve problems in creative and productive ways.
  • Understanding of pedagogical issues related to online teaching and learning as well as current and emerging technologies.
  • Strong sense of urgency
  • Ability to unravel particularly thorny technical content development problems
  • Ability to work on tight deadlines
  • Strong project management skills and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders including authors, trainers, editors, and our counterparts in product, engineering, and production
  • A Bachelor’s degree in educational technology, instructional design, instructional technology, curriculum design, or other related discipline is required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in corporate instructional design, educational technology or curriculum design required.
