Academic Advisor 1

JOB SUMMARY 

The Elisabeth DeLuca School of Nursing invites applications for a full-time, twelve-month position of Academic Advisor I (P3). Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and within the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services, reporting directly to the Elisabeth DeLuca School of Nursing Director of Student Success, meets regularly with students in the pre-licensure programs to advise and counsel them regarding appropriate educational goals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Advises and counsels students in planning their Nursing program as it relates to their educational plan. 
• Counsels students in specific curriculum decisions, including the appropriate choice of courses, scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, waiver of requirements/deadlines, and related matters. 
• Reviews student transcripts and assists in making decisions regarding transfer of major, requests for excess credit, double major or dual degrees. May assist with admissions questions. 
• Monitors student progress to identify problems. Refers issues to higher level as appropriate.  
• Identifies and reports to higher level issues such as warnings, exclusions, suspensions or dismissals; refers warned students, those with academic difficulties, and students contemplating withdrawal for additional counseling. 
• Assist students with enrolling in courses (maintain informal wait lists for classes students cannot enroll into; identify closed classes and track the need for additional sections; coordinate with the Undergraduate Program Director or the instructors the provision of, e.g., out-of-sequence permissions or permission numbers). 
• Works closely with other School advisors to promote consistency and uniformity of judgments regarding such matters as enforcement of academic requirements, academic probation and dismissal, transfer in or out of program, and other similar issues. 
• Communicate with undergraduates regarding Departmental and University events and deadlines, as well as job, internship, and summer opportunities. 
• Provides data for basic statistical reports and maintains appropriate files and records. Writes and/or edits informational and publicity materials. 
• Assist students, faculty, staff, and UConn administration with questions about undergraduate courses and curriculum. 
• Attends Admissions, Enrollment, Advising, and School events, as needed or assigned. 
• Organizes and delivers multiple orientation sessions for incoming students, but also ongoing group advising sessions each semester. 
• Works closely with faculty as well as Admissions and Enrollment Services staff. 
• Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of position-related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support; OR advanced degree in a related field and one year of related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support.
2. Demonstrated ability and knowledge of providing support to undergraduate students, including first-generation college students and students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. 
3. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team setting. 
4. Experience with building rapport with students, families, and university partners.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Master’s degree in counseling, education, or related field. 
2. 3-4 years of experience in counseling and advising students. 
3. Demonstrated knowledge of academic programs in area to be served.
4. Proven ability to troubleshoot problems that interfere with the student’s academic progress and work effectively to resolve them. 
5. Demonstrated knowledge of undergraduate and graduate student populations. 
6. Experience working in an institution of higher education.
7. Experience using Microsoft Excel, Access, and Outlook, PeopleSoft, and File Locker and or other similar database programs. 
8. Demonstrated knowledge of typical State and University policies and procedures. 

APPOINTMENT TERMS 

This is a full-time permanent position, with excellent healthcare and retirement benefits package. The selected incumbent must have the ability to work on occasional nights and weekends and travel occasionally for work purposes.
