Job Description
Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The School-Specific Academic Advisor provides holistic, student-centered academic advising and support that advances student success from onboarding through program progression, persistence, and completion. Serving as a dedicated advising partner to an assigned academic school, this position helps students clarify goals, navigate academic pathways, connect to appropriate college resources, and make informed decisions related to academic planning, transfer, and career direction.This role plays a critical part in advancing the college’s “Flight Path for Student Success” model by delivering proactive, relationship-based advising that promotes early momentum, informed progression, and timely intervention for students in need of additional support. The School-Specific Academic Advisor serves as a liaison between Academic Advising and Transfer Services and the assigned academic school, helping to strengthen communication, alignment, and shared responsibility between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs in support of student success.In an evolving advising structure, this position contributes to the implementation of integrated, high-quality advising practices through effective collaboration, documentation, outreach, and cross-functional coordination. The role also supports continuous improvement by maintaining current knowledge of institutional policies, student success strategies, and emerging best practices in advising, transfer, and student support services.
Special Assignments | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications | Experience providing academic advising, student support, or student success services in a higher education environment Knowledge of academic advising practices, student development theory, and holistic advising approaches Demonstrated knowledge of academic programs, curriculum pathways, transfer opportunities, and enrollment services processes Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply institutional policies, academic regulations, and program requirements Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff Demonstrated experience in working independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional, student-centered environment Experience using advising technologies, student information systems, and case management tools Demonstrated ability in managing multiple student caseloads, documenting advising interactions, and conducting proactive outreach.
Additional Considerations | Graduation from an accredited college or university with course work in counseling or a related field. Progressive experience working with individuals of various backgrounds in an advisory or counseling capacity. Experience advising students within a specific academic discipline or school area.
