I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University School of Nursing (GWNursing) drives innovation and improvements in healthcare worldwide through the education of compassionate nurses, esteemed educators and researchers, entrepreneurial leaders, and influential policy experts.

GWNursing is searching for an Academic Advisor, Student Affairs, to serve as a member of the Office of Student Services team. This position reports to the Director of Student Services. The Academic Advisor will collaborate with students to co-create educational plans in ways that are consistent with their aspirations, interests, strengths, and values.

This position provides integral academic support and direction for students navigating their academic journey. This position serves as an information hub for students and provides students with internal and external resources and opportunities. This position assists students with navigating transitions, exploring options, overcoming challenges, and developing academic plans through individual appointments and group sessions. This role masters knowledge and understanding of GW rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and academic curriculum, tracks and manages student records, develops, maintains, and enhances internal projects that further student success, and enhances programming for specific student populations in order to ensure student success and support students’ individual/specific needs. This position takes part in and supports events such as orientation and graduation, maintains student records from matriculation to graduation, and monitors and responds to student inquiries for transfer credit, leave of absence, and registration.

Specific duties for the School of Nursing include:
  • Advise students in the development of educational plans, course selection, and registration.
  • Assist students with decision-making as it relates to self-exploration, experiential learning & career development.
  • Interpret college and university academic policies and procedures.
  • Interpret degree audit reports (DARS) for students and facilitate appropriate substitutions.
  • Complete transcript evaluations for current and prospective students.
  • Work in conjunction with the academic program coordinator and Director of Student Services.
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of new student orientation.
  • Track student retention and progression data and provide relevant reports.
  • Collaborate with faculty to provide training and resources consistent with best practices in academic advising.
  • Provide students with effective and timely referrals to other college and external support services.
  • Monitor student performances and take appropriate action if necessary; resolve students’ problems regarding curricular requirements.
  • Provide information to students regarding student support services, college policies, and program procedures and guidelines.
  • Identify, develop, and execute programming and events that supports the academic and personal success of nursing students.
  • Track student success initiatives and utilize data in decision-making.
  • Reviews, prepares, and maintains accurate and comprehensive student files for academic progress, success, and retention and ensures deadlines are met for completing various coursework requirements, graduation requirements, and other specific program requirements.
  • Partner with the administration to support efforts with data collection and analysis and use the data to further retention and graduation efforts.
  • Meet individually and in small groups with students as needed.
  • Serve on University committees as needed.
  • Compile information on program services, activities, and students. Maintain accurate, organized, completed, and detailed records and develop and maintain reports as required or assigned.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Earned a Master’s degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, educational psychology, school counseling, counseling, or a related field preferred.
  • Relevant work experience is desired.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic advising and student learning/development theories applied to practice is desired.
  • Experience working with students in a college or university setting is preferred.
  • Computer literacy and strong skills with computer applications are strongly valued.
  • Administrative and organizational skills with the ability to handle simultaneous projects.
  • The ability to utilize technology that supports both students and professional practice (MS Word, Excel, Student Information Systems, Degree Audits, Online Resources, and Support) is desired.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population is preferred.
