Job Purpose
As a member of the dynamic Student Success Center team in the School of Business, the Academic Success Advisor champions the success of a caseload of assigned Business majors and minors from orientation through graduation. Using available technologies, the individual facilitates developmental academic advising that guides students through major and minor selection, degree planning, and course registration while also proactively and intentionally utilizing data/insights to help students make meaningful connections with both their academic programs and academic support resources. The Academic Success Advisor manages a caseload of students in specific majors and minors but is trained to advise for any Business program through appointments or drop-in sessions. Through continuous training as well as partnerships within and beyond the School of Business, the Academic Success Advisor maintains a working knowledge of Business curricula, College policy, and campus resources. The individual also leads opportunities that help students move from a generalized interest in Business programs to the declaration of specific Business majors and minors.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required. FERPA competence required. At least one year of direct, paid, full-time experience in higher education academic advising preferred. Experience with Banner, student retention software, and DegreeWorks (or another degree progress system) preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of undergraduate advising practices, student services, and FERPA along with experience using technology and a thorough understanding of College policies, procedures, and functions.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Strong organizational and coordination abilities, combined with the flexibility to maintain a professional image and provide leadership under stressful conditions, tight deadlines, and constantly changing schedules.
  • Demonstrated capacity to exercise a high level of confidentiality, independent initiative, sound judgment, and professional discretion.
Additional Comments Regarding Position
May be required to work some evenings/weekends to assist with student and/or School functions.

  • Provides academic advising to prospective students, newly admitted first-year and transfer students, and continuing School of Business students through one-on-one advising, group advising, drop-in advising, and special events.
  • Utilizing effective relationship development and advising technologies, helps students choose or reaffirm their School of Business major(s) and minor(s), understand the requirements for their programs of study, and develop a progression plan in the program.
  • Assists the student with course registration and applicable overrides/exceptions.
  • Effectively documents student support in respective platforms.

MAJOR EXPLORATION AND PROGRAMMING:
  • Together with Student Success Center, School of Business, and other College partners, develops, implements, and assesses opportunities that help students move from a generalized interest in Business programs to the declaration of specific Business majors and minors. These opportunities can be implemented in individual advising appointments as well as through programs/events.
  • Takes the lead on School of Business representation at the annual Majors and Minors Fair.
  • Partners with colleagues (including, but not limited to, Student Success Center leadership and the Life Design Center) on special efforts and outreach for Business Administration majors.
  • Leverages partnerships with School of Business faculty and staff to help students build community and understand the experiences and expertise available to them.
  • Provides quantitative and qualitative data that speaks to programmatic impact and future development.

  • Utilizing the College’s retention software as well as professional advising judgement, leads developmental, intrusive conversations with students that help them connect with resources within the Student Success Center and offered through the College that will maximize their academic success.
  • Leverages available data and insights, as well as critical dates in the academic calendar, to motivate proactive student action and to provide the unique support needed for individual students or for identified subsets of the assigned student caseload.
