Job Description:
Position Salary Range:
  • $50,000 - $56,000

Essential Duties:
  • Provides 1:1 as well as group academic advising to all undergraduate SGSUP programs to ensure ongoing successful progress to completion of degree programs.
  • Able to resolve complex issues and take the lead on projects built around student support.
  • Proactively monitors student academic performance; addresses, responds to, and works to resolve student concerns, questions, or issues.
  • Acts as key contributor within advising team to ensure ongoing satisfaction for students with their program and degree progress, provides follow up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services by utilizing a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success.
  • Acts as a college/department/school representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success; attends and/or presents at orientation or recruiting events/activities/workshops.
  • Works closely with students to identify all academic degree options including, but not limited to: degrees, certificates/minors, tutoring, success coaches, career services, counseling, extracurricular activities, research, and internships.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to student enrollment, registration, orientation, and degree completion.
  • Coordinates a program, portion of a large program, or a group of activities and functions within a department or college directed to the retention and success of the student population
  • Coordinates training and development related to advising services, projects and programs for staff.
  • Act as a resource to new advising staff members.
  • Contributes, assesses and evaluates advising policies, projects, or programs and implementation.
  • Serves as college/department liaison to current and prospective students, staff, and external groups on issues related SGSUP programs.
  • Maintain comprehensive, detailed and accurate student records using university-wide systems.
  • Able to learn and use multiple systems and software platforms simultaneously (PeopleSoft, DARS, Salesforce, e-Advisor, E2E and other tools and technology to aid student success and excellent service).
  • Be able to communicate with University partners including The College, units under The College, Registrar, Financial Aid, andSGSUP Graduate Advising.
  • Engages in professional development to remain current in the field.
  • May participate in various unit, college and university committees as appropriate.
  • Escalates/redirects urgent or conflicting requests after attempting resolution.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Evidence of a Master's Degree in a related field AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: academic advising, student recruitment/retention, related student services and/or teaching in an institution of higher education.
  • Experience Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and methods of evidence-based academic advising strategies.
  • Ability to direct and provide support to undergraduate and/or graduate students enrolled at the university.
  • Ability to utilize a wide range of software, student development theory and retention-focused strategies.
  • Ability to work under direct supervision to support students by performing specific, articulated goals and outcomes.
  • Ability to understand general student requests for information and assistance; escalate urgent/conflicting requests.
  • Applies collaborative approaches and strategies to devise solutions for student requests.
  • Ability to utilize collegial interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships.
  • Engages understanding of advising theories and practices; regularly monitors assessment resources to refine and build practice.
  • Ability to rapidly master the essential new technology, practices, policies and methods.
  • Ability to prepare detailed documents, proposals, reports, and/or related materials.
  • Ability to provide analysis of data for identification of trends.
  • Ability to lead staff and program efforts.
  • Ability to create assessment plans and execute assessment reports.
  • Applies and demonstrates knowledge of supporting/guiding students through curriculum requirements; identifies and creates connections to resources for students to support goals; delivers advising practices in accordance to relevant university, college/department/school ethical and legal guidelines; actively builds knowledge of key university, or college/department/school resources.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in an environment focused on continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Skill in problem solving, who can take initiative and set priorities, while being flexible.
  • Ability to develop action plans to meet goals; establishes milestones and timetables.
  • Documents activities and tracks progress.

Working Environment:
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer.
  • Works from general instructions on standard job duties and specific directions/instructions on new assignments.
  • This position is eligible for hybrid work after a training period. Hybrid work is in arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location, after Director approval. This position is not fully remote.

School of Geographical Sciences & Urban Planning (SGSUP) is an academic unit within the division of Social Sciences in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (The College).
