Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Office of Academic Success provides a variety of resources to ensure that all students develop the skills needed to succeed academically at the School of Law. Through Academic Success and Bar Preparation courses, the tutorial program, workshops, individualized academic counseling and advising, and readily available resources, all students have access to information to enable them to become effective and successful law students. Additionally, the Academic Success Program assists with the School of Law’s bar review program for recent graduates (Invest in Success), and other bar preparation programs.
Primary Purpose of Position
The person hired for this position will serve as an Academic Services Professional in the School of Law’s Academic Support Program.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize effectively
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in computer and technology applications, including data management, Microsoft Excel, and report development
  • Ability to effectively teach and present information in both workshop and one-on-one settings
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise sound discretion
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems while maintaining compliance with institutional policies and standards
  • Ability to work independently and make timely, well-informed decisions
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of staff, faculty, and students
Minimum Education/Experience
Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited institution
  • Membership in good standing with a state bar
  • Strong academic record in law school
  • Demonstrated commitment to working closely with students
  • At least three years of experience as a practicing attorney, or one year of experience in student support within a law school

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in academic support or bar support roles working with law students
  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience in higher education, preferably in a law school setting
  • Experience working with students or others in crisis, with the ability to respond calmly, respectfully, and make sound judgments regarding appropriate next steps

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  • Provide academic support designed to increase retention and graduation of law students, specifically by assisting students as they develop and improve legal study and test-taking skills, adjust to the challenges of law school, and prepare for law practice.
  • Analyze the needs, interests, and limitations of students in order to conduct appropriate individualized and confidential academic counseling and coaching.
  • Provide workshops for students, specifically addressing key skills such as time and stress management, effective study skills, exam preparation, and legal writing.
  • Work with members of the administration and faculty to maximize student success and bar passage.
  • Provide individual and group feedback and strategies to enhance writing and analytical skills.
Function Instructional
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  • Teach Academic Success skills courses.
  • Assist, when needed, with the implementation of the first-year and upper-level tutorial program.
  • Meet with students individually to provide one-on-one academic counselling.
  • Advise at-risk and probation student populations on effective study and time management skills and developing strategies for students to reach their academic potential.
  • Mentor and counsel students and graduates from first year through post bar exam.
Function Public Service
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  • Represent the School of Law on a wide range of planning matters, such as leading and/or participating in special projects, serving on University committees and ad hoc teams, and making presentations to management. Performs additional duties as assigned by the Dean.
