ADA Learning Specialist Full Description

Overview:

Touro University Nevada (TUN) seeks a personable, adaptable, and goal-driven professional for the ADA Learning Specialist position within the Office of Academic Services and Institutional Support (OASIS). This is a full-time, permanent position reporting to the Director of OASIS. In addition to OASIS-specific responsibilities, the ADA Learning Specialist will work collaboratively with the other departments housed in the Division of Student Affairs, as well as with University faculty and the academic programs. The ADA Learning Specialist provides services directly to students that maximize the success, retention, and graduation of College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) and College of Health & Human Services (CHHS) students. The successful candidate must also demonstrate dedication to the University’s core values through their work.

Responsibilities:

  1. Meet with students submitting requests and process requests for ADA accommodations.
  2. Work with the Director of OASIS to recommend and maintain appropriate accommodations based on documentation and regulations.
  3. Work with faculty to implement required accommodations.
  4. Provide academic coaching and support for students on an ongoing basis in individual and group formats. Provide students with strategies to improve study skills, study efficiency, test-taking skills, time management skills, etc. Monitor the progress of students at risk of under-performance. Document coaching sessions with students.
  5. Assist faculty and staff in the COM and CHHS to identify students who need tutoring, writing, counseling, or other referrals. Capacity to determine accommodations or additional outside resources.
  6. Develop and deliver workshops for current and prospective students.
  7. Complete AHEAD ADA training.
  8. Complete Accessibility Information Management (AIM) training.
  9. Utilize AIM to update, manage, and communicate ADA-related information and documentation.
  10. Act as a backup testing proctor for the Testing Center when needed.
  11. Attend meetings and events as assigned by the Director and Assistant Director.
  12. Report de-identified ADA information to programs upon request.
  13. Assist with Commencement, White Coat, and/or other university ceremonies.
  14. Attend and participate as needed in the division, department, and University meetings, committees, and events.
  15. Uphold policies and procedures in the university catalog and program handbooks
  16. Demonstrate dedication to the University’s core values through their work.
  17. Provide exceptional service and be able to articulate the mission and values of Touro University Nevada.
  18. Ability to work flexible hours intermittently, such as evenings and Sundays, for special events.
  19. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

Education:    

  • Master’s degree required (Science, Health Science, Social Science, Education or related field preferred)

Experience:  

  • Experience with ADA and supporting students with documented disabilities
  • Experience working with graduate and/or professional students, preferred
  • Experience with graduate-level life or health sciences, preferred
  • Experience teaching, training, and/or delivering presentations
  • Experience working in online environments/with online learning management platforms (LMS)

Skills & Abilities:       

  • Microsoft Office competency (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, OneNote)
  • Zoom video conferencing competency
  • Familiarity with ADA and applicable laws, rules and regulations regarding students with disabilities
  • Familiarity with FERPA and applicable laws, rules and regulations regarding student records
  • Ability to present engaging material to high-achieving graduate students
  • Knowledge of evidence-based active learning theories
  • Superior customer service skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
