Job Description  | Provide advising to undergrad on variety of topics including majors and minors, studying abroad, degree progress, fulfilling requirements, etc. Maintain accurate student records, ensuring requirements are met for all students via degree audits and regular communications with advisees. Prepare student degree certifications. Serve as point of contact for transfer students. Initiate credit evaluations for students, includes research and knowledge of other credit systems inside and outside Syracuse University, advising, mapping out major progression, and scheduling first semester to ensure timely graduation.

Evaluate and approve all external/AP/IB transfer credit and intra-university transfer students as well as assume responsibility for first-year registration, advising incoming first-year students and approval of course choices. Maintain transfer credit evaluation system. Deliver informational workshops for students. May oversee Intra-University Transfer, Post Enrollment Requirement Checking, and/or First-Term Enrollment Selections. Reach out to and refer at-risk students to provide support. Referrals include academic departments, faculty, support services, crisis intervention, personal counseling, financial aid, residence life and University resources. Assist with weekend events and Convocation.

This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU, Local 200United.
Education and Experience  | Bachelor’s degree required, master’s preferred. Three (3) plus years of academic advising experience, preferably in a four-year college setting. Attention to detail and the ability to work accurately are required. Team player with strong communication skills. Self-directed and organized.

Skills and Knowledge  | Must be able to deliver a broad range of advising services while contributing to a professional work environment with a high degree of personal integrity, discretion, and confidentiality. Position requires the ability to identify enhancements and improvements to processes and advising services offered to VPA undergraduate students while maintaining the principles and educational objectives of the College. Must utilize well-developed analytical, technical, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills on a daily basis, performing tasks that require complex, professional judgment.

Responsibilities  | Provide one-on-one advising and consistent outreach to a caseload of students on various topics including majors and minors, study abroad/study away, degree progress, fulfilling requirements, course selection/scheduling etc. Maintain up-to-date and accurate student records for a caseload of students and verify that degree requirements are met using degree audits and regular communications with advisees. Process student degree certifications upon degree completion. Maintain up-to-date and accurate student records for all VPA students. Update records and process forms including petitions, withdrawals, readmissions, intra-university transfer, declaration of major, independent study, grading option, etc. Responsible for transfer credit processing for all current and prospective VPA students. This process includes outreach to appropriate departments throughout the University and posting of transfer credits to student information system (Peoplesoft). Data processing and data entry of student records and requests, including those related to student records access (FAST request). Update and support for degree audits including the processing of exceptions and/or degree certifications. Assist in Welcome Week, Convocation and family weekend events. Other duties as assigned.
