Job Description 
Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) changes lives, empowers students to succeed, and enhances the social and economic vitality of the region through high-quality education and workforce training, excellent service, and innovative partnerships.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Accessibility Services, ASL Interpreters and Academic Assistants (s) provide effective American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and transliteration services for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals during in-person and virtual classroom instruction, student services appointments, tutoring, and campus events. This position ensures full access to college communication and academic services and performs work as a reader, scribe, notetaker, and test proctor for the Office of Accessibility Services. This position will assist students seeking services in accessibility services for the student intake process to receive academic accommodation, administer scheduling and intake appointments, and other meetings. This position will update the OAS calendar, in addition to maintaining the student accommodation requests from students and coordinating the interpreter schedules and service requests. This position will practice the regulations of FERPA & confidentiality for all students. The incumbent also contributes to the college’s public engagement and inclusive communication efforts by building partnerships with agencies and organizations, supporting ADA-compliant outreach, and interpreting content used in public-facing events and media. This role serves as a vital communication conduit, enhancing access to VPCC’s messaging and programming for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. The primary work location for this position is VPCC’s Hampton campus – weekly travel to VPCC’s campus location is required.

Special Assignments  | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications 
- Must have a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
- Must be available (Monday-Friday) to work flexible daytime and/or evening hours and occasional weekends at any VPCC campuses and all extension centers or events.
- Demonstrated proficiency using English grammar is required.
- Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III OR Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) – National Interpreter Certification (NIC)
- Experience at post-secondary level interpreting or equivalent experience.
- Must hold any of the following certifications: NIC Master, NIC Advanced, NIC, NAD5, CSC, CI/CT, CDI, RSC, MCSC, OTC CI or CT, TSC4 IC/TC, NAD 4, TSC3, CS-IV, I-IV, T-IV, T-III/I-III, IC or TC, TSC:2, CS-III, I-III, T-III, T-II/I-II, NAD 3, TSC:1, CS-II, I-II, T-II.)

Knowledge
- Comprehensive knowledge of deaf culture and language required.
- Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language required.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable policies, applicable federal, state, and local laws (FERPA and ADA).
- Substantial knowledge of student services procedures.

Additional Considerations 
Training and experience in ASL, English, Communication Studies, or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of education, certification(s), training, and experience.
