I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University Law School is the oldest law school in Washington DC. GW Law was established in 1865 as the Columbian College Department of Law and in those 150 years, GW Law has become a highly ranked and respected institution. The Law School offers diverse academic opportunities in an atmosphere that fosters a strong sense of inclusion and community to a large, diverse, and highly motivated student body.

This leadership position oversees all aspects of certain large, complex, and highly visible programs for students, including new student orientation. This role performs proactive outreach and coordinates university-wide efforts to promote student success and wellness. This position oversees staff, designs, and provides educational programs and training for campus partners in the academic schools to enhance the success of the programs.

This position sets the direction for various programs, including strategic direction, event planning and execution, marketing and web management, and community outreach, in addition to regular monitoring and reporting. This is a management position at the Law School that supervises staff directly, makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training, and mentoring, manages performance, and determines future staffing needs.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Education and academic counseling of students, including informing students about the requirements of the Bulletin and for graduation.
  • Discuss, develop, and implement academic policy with the Records Office, Dean’s Office, and other constituent offices.
  • Oversee the assessment of and drafting recommendations to the Academic Scholarship Committee on student requests for exceptions to academic rules.
  • Partner with full-time, tenure track, visiting, and adjunct faculty to discuss and resolve student issues with faculty members and other University officials.
  • Provide strategic management and oversight of logistics, planning, and implementation of incoming student Orientation.
  • Assist the Dean of Students Office and other relevant offices in effectuating course registration, exam administration, admitted students’ Preview Day, and graduation.
  • Serve on or chair Law School committees as assigned.
  • Advise and participate in the activities of student organizations as appropriate.
  • Assess, develop, and deliver Inns of Court professional development programming; serves as an advisor to Inns of Court professional development program, including for evening/part-time students.
  • Draft and update content for the website, academic advising documents, policy statements, and Bulletin.
  • Administration of the Academic Integrity Code for the law school, including initial review and recommendation based on relevant documentation and counseling of affected students.
  • Review and respond to student requests for character and fitness, enrollment, and other forms required for bar admission.
  • Manage and supervise office staff, including the front desk and other administrative staff.
  • Serve as acting Associate Dean of Students in the absence of the Dean of Students. Support and liaison for functions with faculty, staff, alumni, and others associated with the Law School for the benefit of the Dean of Students Office.
  • Attend meetings within the Law School and university in support of the mission of the Law School and as requested.

Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 8 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Effective counseling skills.
  • Excellent event planning and implementation skills.
  • Highly organized and self-directed.
