Job Summary  | The Student Transition Programs (STP) department at The University of Texas at Dallas is excited to welcome an Assistant Director of Transfer and Transitions to the team!

The RoleThe Assistant Director of Transfer & Transition Programs provides leadership for initiatives that support transfer and continuing students throughout their academic journey at UT Dallas. This role oversees Transfer Orientation, Transfer Student Services, the Tau Sigma National Honor Society, and Year Experience programs for sophomore, junior, and senior students, while supervising professional and student staff. The Assistant Director also manages departmental communications, marketing, budgets, and signature events. Through collaboration and innovative programming, this position advances student success, connection, and belonging within the Comet community.

The Department
STP supports Freshman Orientation, Transfer Orientation, Transfer Student Services, Commuter Student Programs, Comet Families, Comet Camp, Transition Programming (Sophomore Year Experience, Junior Year Experience, and Senior Year Experience), and the UT Dallas Mobile App.

Mission of STP
In support of the mission of The University of Texas at Dallas and the Division of Student Affairs, Student Transition Programs facilitates the transition of new students and their families into the institution and provides programs, services, and involvement opportunities specific to first-year students, transfer students, commuter students, the families of students, sophomores, juniors, and seniors as they evolve throughout their education. Through a welcoming atmosphere, we provide the framework for students to learn and develop as they adjust to the expectations, standards, and academic rigors of the university while fostering pride in the UT Dallas community.

Minimum Education and Experience  | Bachelors degree and three years of experience in higher education, supervisory experience, knowledge of student development theory, knowledge of orientation programming and other student life functional areas.

Preferred Education and Experience  |
Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Student Development, Counseling, or related discipline. Experience with orientation and/or other student life functional areas. 2-4 years of demonstrated success advising college students, developing student leaders, and advising students. Demonstrated success in large-scale event planning and management. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, and the ability to meet multiple deadlines. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Ability to demonstrate awareness of marketing initiatives or event promotion strategies. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated customer service, conflict-resolution, and facilitation techniques. Proven ability to make independent decisions aligned with departmental and university missions. 

Other Qualifications  | To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  | Duties include, but not limited to- Provide leadership in the development and coordination of a comprehensive transfer student orientation program and related student initiatives. Supervise the Coordinator of Transfer & Transition Programs. Oversee the supervision, recruitment, selection, and training of student employees and interns. Serve as the primary contact for transfer students seeking information, guidance, and resources to support their successful transition into the UT Dallas community. Designs and implements programs and services that promote connection, belonging, and student success (e.g., Transfer Orientation activities, Transfer Student Leadership Program, year experience programs, and other engagement initiatives). Lead departmental efforts in managing digital communication and engagement platforms, including management of content, trainings, and communication strategies across digital systems and Microsoft Teams channels Collaborate with the Director to strategize, implement, and monitor program fund expenditures and departmental budgets. Advise and support the Tau Sigma Honor Society. Contributes to marketing and outreach efforts across digital, web, and social media platforms to promote departmental programs and initiatives. Manage various logistical tasks such as payment reports, shared inboxes, phone lines, complaint logs, activity reports, and other departmental platforms. Build and maintain strong relationships with student affairs, academic departments, student organizations, and external higher education or professional organizations. Represent the department at University events such as Scholars’ Day, Preview Friday, and other outreach or recruitment events. Contribute to unit-wide initiatives, including assessment, student leader development, recognition, and morale-building efforts. Support planning and implementation of unit programs such as Comet Families, Freshman & Family initiatives, student projects, departmental events, and team procedures. Co-Chair the Orientation Advisory Committee. Serve on University committees and perform other duties as assigned by the Director. 

Physical Demands and Working Conditions  | Work outside of the normal business hours may be required.

Schedule: Mon – Fri 8 am-5 pm; Nights and weekends as needed.

Work in a dynamic office environment, with frequent interaction with students, staff, and external partners.
General office conditions may include standing or sitting for long periods of time and moving or lifting objects if able. Employees if able can obtain a valid Texas driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record during employment to drive a UT Dallas-owned vehicle or golf cart.
