Job purpose:
Springer Publishing Company is seeking an Assistant Editor for our medicine and health sciences publishing programs. The Assistant Editor ensures the smooth and efficient operation of the editorial/acquisitions department working directly with editors, authors, and all internal staff as needed. The role supports content strategists, authors, and contributors in all aspects of the publishing process from proposal to final product and serves as a key interdepartmental contact.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Assist with evaluation of production-readiness for new manuscripts
- Assist with preparing publishing plans and proposals, tracking projects, and monitoring delivery commitments to ensure timely completion
- Record and route contracts for newly acquired projects
- Correspond with authors and contributors regarding manuscript preparation and submission details; send out guidelines and contributor packs
- Manage contributor contract process for multi-authored works
- Collaborate with and assist content development team during the manuscript process
- Liaise with all departments in support of the senior content strategist
- Log, review, and evaluate manuscripts as they are submitted
- Track and receive missing manuscript materials from authors
- Develop cover design briefs on appropriate timelines and support the cover design process including communication with freelance designers, authors, and the senior content strategist
- Prepare and transmit manuscripts and ancillary resources from Editorial to Production
- Update and present pricing P&Ls after transmittals
- Maintain accuracy, integrity, and currency of departmental publishing plans, records, and databases
- Solicit and compile endorsements for back cover copy and promotional material
- Help draft, edit, and proofread back cover copy, marketing materials, catalogs, brochures, and web and other sales copy
- Solicit peer reviews of textbook proposals, revision proposals, and draft manuscripts as needed
- As assigned, manage the editorial process on selected projects assuming all author communications from contract to publication
Qualifications:
- 2+ years publishing experience preferred
- BA/BS required
- Extremely detail-oriented and organized
- Superior project management skills
- Advanced writing and oral communication skills are essential
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects at once, meet deadlines, and effective time management
- Self-motivated, able to work independently, effective team-player
- Excellent computer skills
Physical requirements:
- While working remotely able to be hybrid as needed with ability to come to Princeton for meetings and as needed
- Willingness to travel as needed (at least 3 meetings per year)
