Job Description | Syracuse University seeks a strategic and collaborative leader to serve as the Assistant Vice President for Research supporting high-impact projects and managing a complex research administration portfolio at a university that continues to expand its research capabilities and partnerships with government, industry, and community stakeholders. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Research, the Assistant Vice President for Research acts as the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer for the Office of Research. The ideal candidate will be an experienced, detail-oriented research administrator who brings both leadership and hands-on knowledge of research operations. The Assistant VP thrives in a dynamic environment and is adept at managing competing and working with leadership in central university administration and across the University’s schools and colleges. Experience supervising high-performing personnel is essential. A strong working knowledge of research regulations and compliance frameworks is required, along with sound judgment and the ability to work independently while knowing when to seek guidance. High integrity, flexibility, and a collaborative, solutions-driven mindset will be key to success in this role.
Education and Experience | Master’s degree in a relevant field, PhD preferred. Six (6) plus years of progressively responsible experience in the administration research or accounting at a university, in the federal government, or another research-intensive entity engaged in sponsored research.
Skills and Knowledge | Exceptional numerical and analytical skills and experience of long-range, mullti-year planning for major budgets. Experience developing and implementing research administration policies and procedures. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of federal, state, and sponsor regulations regarding research administration (including but not limited to: Code of Federal Regulations, Federal Acquisition Regulations, NSF PAPPG, NIH Grants Policy Statement, etc.). Proficiency with Office, Tableau, Advanced Excel, Hyperion, and PeopleSoft. Proven leadership and supervisory experience in a research administration setting. Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. High professional and personal integrity.
Responsibilities | Act as the Chief Financial Officer for the Office of Research, overseeing all aspects of the Office of Research budget, which includes the operating budget for multiple departments with the Office of Research and a dynamic and complex initiatives budgets for equipment, faculty retention, recharge centers, university research institutes, postdoctoral scholars, and capital projects. Work with schools and colleges to understand and ensure that the University’s investment of more than $100M of institutional research expenditures at Syracuse University produces the greatest returns for the research enterprise. Work with central budget and planning and academic affairs on long range planning for major research initiatives and investments. Act as the Chief Operating Officer for the Office of Research, overseeing space planning, staff and contingency planning, postdoctoral affairs, data analytics, sponsored research, and related functions for the Office of Research. Oversee the staffing and non-academic operations of university-level research institutes. Resolve complex administrative and management problems. Ensures a high level of support to schools and colleges. Works openly and communicates productively with multiple administrative units, including the Office of General Counsel, the Comptroller’s Office, colleges, and departments, and others as necessary. Represents the Office of Research on university-wide committees as appropriate. Reports on important issues and provides guidance on appropriate actions to resolve the issues. Provide strategic leadership and and management of all data and analytics reporting for the University’s research enterprise. Oversee the preparation and submission of all research related reports to internal and external audiences including the Board of Trustees, federal, state, and local governments, and industry and foundation partners and other university stakeholders. Collaborate closely with the Comptroller’s Office to ensure integration of research with accounting and compliance. Collaborate with Information Technology Services to ensure that the Research enterprise has appropriate support. Review, develop, and administer policies, including collaborative strategic planning, development and implementation of new administrative concepts, electronic systems, technologies, and programs to increase the efficiency of the University’s research enterprise.
