Job Description | General Description:
The Office of the Controller is responsible for ensuring the college’s financial integrity. As the Associate Controller, the incumbent will achieve this by supporting the goals of the Controller’s Office and providing excellent accounting and financial services to all students, staff, and internal and external customers. This position will be responsible in ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, processing payroll, accounts payable, and student accounting, and maintaining financial records in compliance with all state and federal regulations.
Duties and Tasks:Supporting the Controller in designing and implementing accounting policies, internal controls, and financial systems. Efficiently manage time and resources to handle daily priorities and ensure the smooth operation of the Controller’s Office. Developing financial reports, management dashboards, and training materials for college staff and leadership. Implementing new processes and systems to increase the efficiency and accuracy of financial operations. Providing timely and accurate financial information to college administrators, boards, and external partners. Assisting with internal and external audits and implementing corrective action plans to resolve findings and prevent reoccurrence. Ensure that all operational accounting records of the College are recorded and maintained in within Commonwealth Accounting Policies and Procedures (CAPP) guidelines, Virginia Community College System (VCCS) policies and procedures, the Federal Student Aid Handbook, the Blue Book, and any other applicable State or Federal law or regulation. Make regular requests from employees for updates and input on college decisions and share feedback with supervisors for inclusion in the NOVA Brief.
Special Assignments | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications | KSAs: Knowledge of integrated financial systems and related automated systems applications Strong knowledge of accounting principles Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills, with the professionalism and business acumen to work effectively with both internal and external partners. Ability to prioritize work in a multi-task environment and work independently as well as to work as part of a team Advanced proficiency in spreadsheets and data analysis. The ability to analyze problems, develop solutions, and implement decisions efficiently while working under pressure and meeting deadlines. A proven ability to be a team player with a “Customer-First” attitude and the capacity to build and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels. Ability to interpret policies and regulations and apply appropriately to transactional data.
Minimum Work Experience:Experience in a managerial level position with supervisory responsibility for a complex financial operation. Experience in higher education or government with financial aid programs. Experience in ARMICS, or other internal control frameworks. Experience with large-scale ERP systems like PeopleSoft or NetSuite or Oracle, specifically with the general ledger, and other accounting related modules. Experience in financial management. Experience in resolving audit findings and implementing corrective action plans, developing, implementing and maintaining internal controls to effectively safeguard and manage finance resources. Experience in overseeing and managing all accounting operations, including payroll, accounts payable, grants and financial aid. Experience in preparing financial and management reports including forecasting.
Additional Considerations | Experience as a project lead or director on complex projects, particularly with ERP implementations like Oracle/PeopleSoft. Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant
