Advertised Job Summary | University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville is seeking an academic leader for their next Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education.
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE GREENVILLEThe University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville is a four-year medical program developed as a partnership between the University of South Carolina and Prisma Health—Upstate.
In August 2012, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville (USCSOMG) opened on Greenville Memorial Medical Campus, welcoming a charter class of 53 first-year medical students. In 2014, the school received full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). In 2019, the school reached its full capacity with 400 students enrolled and now accepts 110 students per class.
Because of the close partnership between USC and Prisma Health, the educational experience offered at USCSOMG is unique. Students are immersed in the healthcare delivery system from their first week and are taught by experienced biomedical educators and clinical faculty from Prisma Health using a state-of-the-art integrated curriculum. The curriculum is a blend of interactive experiences from classroom to clinical learning environment to community that is designed to foster and enhance the acquisition of essential knowledge, communication, diagnostic and problem-solving skills, and lead to application, critical thinking, and patient care.
POSITION SUMMARYThe Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville (USCSOMG) is responsible for the UME curriculum from matriculation to graduation, ensuring the highest standards of academic excellence, innovative programming, and successful preparation and transition to Graduate Medical Education (GME).
RESPONSIBILITIES• Oversees the undergraduate medical education curriculum in total and ensures continuous quality curricular improvement to meet LCME accreditation standards.• Leads the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) including oversight of the Assistant Dean for Pre-Clerkship Education, Assistant Dean for Clerkship and Post- Clerkship Education, and Directors for the Integrated Practice of Medicine longitudinal curricula. M3 Clinical Clerkship Directors and M4 Directors report to the Assistant Dean for Post-Clerkship Education.• Leads ongoing enhancement of USCSOMG integrated curriculum and in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Program Assessment and Accreditation, oversees evaluation/assessment related to the curriculum.• Works collaboratively with the members of the Academic Affairs Leadership team including the other Associate Deans (Research, GME, Faculty Affairs & Development, Student Affairs, Admissions, CASE, and Institutional Data, Evaluation, Accreditation, and Strategic Planning.)• Works collaboratively with the Prisma Health Vice Chairs of Academic Affairs, the GME Program Directors, and other faculty physicians/clinicians to assure availability of quality clinical experiences, to identify and orient engaged and informed preceptors, and monitor prompt student grades and evaluations consistent with LCME accreditation standards.• Develops and revises annual Computer Based Training (CBT) for faculty ensuring LCME and operational compliance for the clinical learning environment.• Serves as an experienced advisor for all students and faculty on internal and external clinical experiences and related problem-solving; career counseling; NRMP processes; disciplinary issues; and end of school transition.• Works with USCSOMG higher education and clinical learning environment (CLE) partners to develop and implement programs such as interprofessional education, lifestyle medicine, population health, health systems science etc., and facilitating instructional design as appropriate.• Serves as a contributing member of Academic Affairs Leadership and the Dean’s Cabinet promoting collaborative problem solving and constructive team dynamics; leads the development and implementation of institutional policies/procedures about curriculum; and facilitating continuous quality improvement.• Is a permanent ad hoc member of the Curriculum Committee, serving as the liaison between the Committee and the Office of UME to promote continuous assessment and enhancement of the curriculum.• Is an ex-officio, non-voting member of the Student Evaluations and Promotions Committee.
Required Education and Experience | REQUIREMENTS
• MD/DO, MD/PhD, or PhD with board certification/eligibility and is eligible for South Carolina licensure as applicable
• Outstanding academic record with experience as a leader in a school of medicine and an academic medical center environment
• Demonstrated leadership competencies
• History of building and/or enhancing medical education programs
• Demonstrated leadership in areas contributing to culture, access, and stakeholder engagement, as well as a commitment to advancing these principles within the office and USCSOMG
• Leadership experience such as academic vice chair, academic chair, assistant/associate dean, GME program director, or leading senior faculty in academic medical education setting
