The Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education: Academic Affairs and Faculty Partnerships in the Office for Undergraduate Education (OUE) is a key contributor to the overall academic success and experience of undergraduates and faculty in Emory University’s College of Arts and Sciences (Emory College). The Associate Dean is responsible for providing strategic leadership for undergraduate academic affairs, including the effective delivery of the undergraduate curriculum in Emory College. They will focus their efforts on the social sciences and STEM disciplines, providing critical administrative and curricular support for faculty and departments in those fields. They will work to develop and implement effective academic policies and assessment processes, as well as provide expert counsel to faculty and departments on matters of enrollment, assessing and advancing the curriculum, and developing new majors, minors, and other academic programs. The Associate Dean will also provide key support to departments and academic advising around specific and often complex curricular, faculty, and individual student issues.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • As an Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, plays a leadership role in managing academic affairs offices and programs in Emory College of Arts and Sciences, in the Office for Undergraduate Education.
  • Manages multiple academic programs and the teams of staff working on those academic programs. Have responsibility for strategic planning and developing processes to achieve those goals.
  • Works with the Dean, Senior Associate Dean, and other school leaders to provide direction and organization of academic affairs within a school.
  • Has responsibility for academic policy development and implementation, including the work of managing faculty standing committees and implementing policies for students and/or faculty/departments.
  • Represents their school and programs internally to faculty, administration, and other university offices, and serves on University committees, as necessary.
  • Externally, has responsibility for communicating and working with audiences including peers, alumni, and parents.
  • Represents the University at national conferences. The Associate Dean of Academic Affairs is part of a leadership team in the Office for Undergraduate Education. This group is responsible for supporting student academic success and partnering with faculty to offer academic programs and services.
  • The Office for Undergraduate Education supports and advises the Dean of Emory College of Arts and Sciences on issues related to undergraduate education. Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • PhD or a comparable terminal degree and seven years of administrative experience in a university setting, preferably in an academic affairs office.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring staff is helpful. A record of working with academic policy and curricular issues and as an effective partner to faculty is essential. Excellent communication skills.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
  • Additional responsibilities include providing collaborative oversight of Emory’s General Education Requirements (GERs) and First-Year Seminars (FYS) and managing its dual- degree and 4+1 programs, including the engineering dual degree program offered by Emory College and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech).
  • The Associate Dean will work closely with College leadership to strengthen and sustain Emory College’s liberal arts curriculum, as well as support curricular and co-curricular innovation.
  • Working in collaboration with other senior leaders in the College and across the OUE, including the Faculty Divisional Deans, the Associate Dean will work to create and implement programs, policies, processes, and initiatives that advance the undergraduate academic experience, supporting both students and faculty in their pursuit of excellence in the liberal arts at Emory University.
  • Provides mission-critical curricular and co-curricular support to all College faculty, and targeted support to faculty, Directors of Undergraduate Studies, and department chairs in all STEM and social science departments in Emory College; provision includes academic planning, policy interpretation and support, assessment, and course enrollment management, as well as orientation and ongoing educational programming training for Directors of Undergraduate Studies, new faculty and department chairs.
  • Serves as primary liaison to STEM and social science departments, chairs and
    faculty (approximately 15 departments and programs); assists College and departmental leadership with enrollment management. 
  • In consultation with College leadership and faculty governing bodies, develops, executes and maintains undergraduate academic policies and best practices in support of excellence in the liberal arts, as well as regularly auditing and revising policies and processes to avoid creating unnecessary burdens for students and faculty.
  • In partnership with the OUE Academic Affairs leadership team serves as a primary subject expert on academic policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Provides critical cross-functional support within the OUE for academic advising, academic support resources, and strategic curricular initiatives designed to improve student success and retention across STEM and social science fields.
  • Provides ad hoc support to academic advising and its leadership, particularly with complex student and instructional issues.
  • Guides efforts in curricular development, assessment of academic programs, and ensuring adherence to accreditation standards.
  • Leads initiatives focused on advancing best practices in social science and STEM education; works collaboratively to address academic issues and concerns and develop strategies to improve student outcomes, including retention and graduation.
  • Serves as key liaison between Emory College and Emory’s Oxford College, Goizueta Business School, and the Woodruff School of Nursing, as well as other key campus partners including the University Registrar.
  • Provides collaborative thought-leadership on best practices around artificial intelligence as it relates to teaching, learning, and academic integrity.
  • Represents the College by serving on key university-wide committees and other decision-making bodies; supports faculty governance, including serving as ex officio leadership for key faculty governance committees.
  • Works collaboratively with campus partners within the OUE, the College and across the institution, including those who support student engagement, student success, and other campus partners to ensure equitable Social Science and STEM success for all student populations.
  • Supervises academic affairs and accommodated testing professional staff and ensures productivity and outputs of special project leads external to the OUE (including faculty).
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least five years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, including in a supervisory role, with significant experience in undergraduate education required.
  • At least five years of experience providing support to faculty across the disciplines.
  • Experience with curricular design, academic policies and best practices, and accreditation processes required.
  • Strategic mindset; able to advance creative solutions and/or new ideas in collaboration with wide-ranging educational communities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with a background in strategic planning and curricular assessment.
  • Experience with student and curricular data management systems and curricular planning tools required.
  • Demonstrated experience in undergraduate teaching and advising/mentoring required.
  • Commitment to holistic student and faculty support in a liberal arts environment essential.
  • Evidence of research experience and pedagogical training in STEM or social science discipline.
  • Six – 10 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, with significant experience in undergraduate education required.
  • Six – 10 years of experience partnering with faculty across the disciplines, with a focus on STEM and/or the social sciences.
  • Experience supporting STEM and quantitative social science grant processes, including those focused on advancing cohort-based educational models and course-based undergraduate research experiences preferred.
