Description | Reporting to the Director of the Writing Center, the Associate Director oversees the day-to-day operations of the Writing Center and develops and implements strategic initiatives and programs to enhance writing support across the institution. This role involves managing key projects, overseeing one-on-one consultations, workshops, and writing resources for various departments, as well as hiring and supervising staff. There is also an opportunity to teach first year writing and/or tutor training practicum on an as-needed basis.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Oversees the day-to-day operation of the Writing Center, including its physical space and staff. Hires, supervises, and manages 30 – 40 part-time Writing Center staff. Oversees the writing support scheduling system and email accounts to coordinate consultations, online tutoring, and workshops. Develops and implements strategic initiatives for the Writing Center. Facilitates ongoing tutor professional development. Advises the Director on policy decisions and initiatives for the Writing Center, including budget proposals. Collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to integrate writing resources into academic contexts. Conceives, develops, and administers various writing support programs and activities, including write-in, workshops, class visits, orientations, etc. Assists and supports tutors who conduct research related to the Writing Center, or in Writing Center Studies. Provides mentorship feedback to tutors on a regular basis, including through regular annual tutor observations and written feedback and evaluations. Represents the Writing Center at university events and professional conferences. Manages the social media and marketing plans of the Writing Center. Stays current in writing center theory, research, and pedagogy. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications | PhD degree in Writing and Rhetoric Studies or related field required. Minimum 5 years of related experience. Experience managing or working in a Writing Center and in peer tutoring. Experience using WCOnline. Excellent interpersonal skills and strong communication abilities. Experience teaching academic writing to undergraduate and graduate students. Collaborative orientation with the ability to manage and organize a wide range of people and projects. This position requires a flexible work schedule, including late evenings and/or occasional weekends and the ability to travel to conferences.
Preferred Qualifications | Experience with writing studies research preferred. Knowledge of Google applications (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides). Familiarity with writing center best practices and current trends in writing pedagogy.

Salary/Salary Range | $75,000 - $80,000

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education.
