Job Summary/Basic Functions
The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join as team as a Associate Payroll Manager. The Associate Payroll Manager independently performs advanced professional level work of considerable difficulty, requiring the analysis and interpretation of fiscal data, and the application of accounting theory and principles to various aspects of the payroll function. The scope encompasses all functions related to the processing of the University's payroll, including, but not limited to: inspection and analysis of automated reports between multiple systems advanced tax and benefit reconciliations, preparation of complex fiscal spreadsheets and reportsdevelopment of procedures for key fiscal processes. advanced skills and independent responsibility with analyzing data and resolving problemsreconcile and file taxes for multiple statesinterpret and apply tax laws and regulationsmeet numerous inflexible deadlinesprocess mandatory withholdings such as garnishments and liensensure proper benefit deductionsprocess electronic timesheets and payroll for classified staffassist payroll manager with administering payroll operations, providing direction and support to payroll staff
Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications
Knowledge of integrated computerized financial or payroll systemsKnowledge of payroll policies and proceduresKnowledge of general accounting principles and practices and ability to apply the principles and methods to a variety of payroll operation functionsKnowledge of state and federal laws and regulations concerning payroll and payroll deductions, including wage-hour regulations, benefits plans and reportingProficiency with processing, reconciling and preparing financial transactions and reportsProficiency with Microsoft Excel and WordExcellent written and oral communication skillsAbility to work independently in a high stress, deadline driven environment, to identify and resolve problemsProven ability to work closely with internal and external customers in a collaborative team environmentAbility to lead and train staff
Required Experience:Experience with explaining policies and proceduresExperience with payroll tax laws and regulationsExperience with supervising and training staff (if duties require supervision)Experience with analyzing and reconciling fiscal data

EDUCATION
Bachelors degree from a college or university with major studies in accounting or related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience
