Description:

Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, functions as a strategic and collaborative leader as the inaugural Associate Vice President (AVP) for Total Rewards in the Human Resources Division. The AVP has responsibility for the leadership of Emory's benefits, compensation, work life, and health and well-being programs to achieve excellence and innovation in all operational and fiscal aspects while being fully compliant with regulatory requirements. The AVP will bring the expertise, creativity and sound judgment to be a key member of the human resources leadership team.

 

With a strong blend of both benefits and compensation experience, the AVP will combine keen operational and administrative planning and execution skills with strategic vision and an affinity for Emory's mission and aspirations. Balances the long-term goals of the university with short-term needs and has the agility to quickly pivot and manage unforeseen events and trends. Stimulates and fosters innovation in the fields of benefits and compensation in a way that respects and capitalizes Emory's culture and traditions. Maintains productive and collaborative relationships with internal and external colleagues and constituents. Leads, manages, and contributes to several high-level university standing and/or ad hoc committees, including those focused on benefits, compensation strategy, and compliance-related concerns. Partners with University Communications
and Marketing to ensure effective Total Rewards communication.

 

Benefits and Work Life are responsible for the design and administration of all benefits (e.g., medical, retirement, courtesy scholarship, etc.), while Health and Well-being offers programs to support the physical, mental, social, and financial well-being of Emory employees. Compensation is responsible for creating and administering compensation programs that are externally competitive, internally equitable, and fully compliant with federal and state regulations.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors, evaluates, and enhances Emory's benefits and compensation programs and gains approval and acceptance for implementation
  • Oversees compliance of plans, policies, procedures, and programs to include monitoring legislation before enacted, assessing and recommending responses, and implementing changes, as necessary
  • Ensures overall delivery of consistent, accurate, timely, effective, and efficient administration, advice, and services
  • Drives system and process efficiencies, data security and integrity, and proper adherence to budgets.
  • Develops and monitors key performance indicators regarding plan performance, internal and external operations, and customer service delivery. 
  • identifies and/or benchmarks trends and implements appropriate solutions.
  • Serves as an active member or facilitator of multiple committees (e.g., Fringe Benefits Committee, Pension Board, Executive Compensation Committee).
  • Oversees timely and accurate regulatory plan filings and communications within the university.
  • Provides leadership and development to the Benefits, Compensation, Work Life, and Health and Wellness teams of approximately 25 members, including several senior direct reports.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, healthcare administration or related healthcare field and 10 years of senior-level and/or progressively responsible experience in benefits and compensation.
  • Advanced degree and professional certifications in the areas of human resources, benefits, and/or compensation strongly preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of benefits, compensation, work life, and wellness programs plus expertise in the relevant administration, resources, tools, and best practices.
  • Leadership and management experience in a large, multi-disciplined department.
  • Demonstrated success in planning, designing, and leading the implementation of new programs requiring extensive project management skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, motivate, and support a diverse staff in a complex organization with competing priorities while maintaining a high-touch culture.
  • Willingness to draw upon expert opinion to present new options for consideration to positively and proactively influence necessary organizational change.
  • Excellent problem solving and customer service skills.
  • Advanced ability to conduct a robust request for proposal process and negotiate vendor services, including pricing and identifying creative solutions to meet unique needs.
  • Solid analytical ability and good judgment to balance compliance and administration with compassion and understanding for employees and retirees.
  • Working knowledge of new and innovative technologies to improve business processes, operational effectiveness, and employee communications (e.g., webinars, podcasts, videos, smartphone apps, etc.).
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and presentation skills and the ability to influence senior staff members.
