Career Advisor Full Description

Posting Title: Career Advisor Overview: 
This position provides high quality in-person and virtual career advising and development service to the undergraduate, graduate and alumni populations within an active, student-centered office. The career advisor is responsible for the articulation of the office mission while also planning program and event implementation regarding fundamental career development service and delivery.  The career advisor is also expected to consistently contribute and further office initiatives as part of an active team member.
 
Programs and services are expected to reflect the institutional mission, vision, and strategic direction and to support student recruitment, retention, career/graduate school aspirational development and successful graduation. The advisor must be responsive to the student population, accomplished with attention to high standards, quality, collaboration and fiscal soundness. Additionally, the career advisor will participate in the cultivation of employer and alumni relationships, as needed.
 
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $53,300.00

Responsibilities: 
1. Advising
a. Provide career advising to undergraduate, graduate and alumni populations
b. Maintain a strong knowledge base of career counseling principles and methodology
c. Promote, support and monitor student career engagement and success
d. Execute career strategies individually and as part of a working group
e. Maintain high-level knowledge of career related issues including but not limited to: career goal planning, developmental advising/counseling, major choice, resume/cover letter writing, networking, interviewing, internship/job/graduate school search, and participating in extracurricular activities/events/programs
f. Support the delivery and ongoing use of skills, personality, and career related assessments
g. Support students development of problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking skills
2. Presentation Skills
a. Present to prospective students, orientation programs, classes, workshops
b. Maintain high-level presentation skills for both in-person and virtual engagements
c. Develop and execute purposeful and engaging programs/workshops for targeted audiences of diverse sizes and populations
3. Outreach Planning with Faculty & Staff
a. Consult and build strategic relationships with assigned academic departments and student facing office including but not limited to the Office of International Students, Center for Cultural Engagement, Residence Life, and Disability Support Services
b. Build programming in conjunction with faculty, staff and student organizations
c. Establish protocol for regular class presentations and/or programming/events/workshops on career and graduate school related issues
d. Stay current of professional advances, techniques and best practices in the fields of career development
4. Marketing
a. Assist in developing marketing materials for targeted that support office initiatives
b. Participate in collaborative marketing of other offices and divisions within the university that address attaining career and further educational goals 
c. Assist in the creation and maintenance of advising resources (web pages, social media, workshops, print materials, etc.)
5. Technology
a. Utilize a variety of technologies in order to provide the required services as well as track student progress including the ability to properly use the information found in:
b. Office of Institutional Research
c. EAB advising system
d. The university’s job and internship posting system
e. LinkedIn
f. Focus2 (STRONG and MBTI if certification funding is available)
g. Identify, recommend, and utilize new technology as it becomes available
 
Qualifications: 
  1. A Bachelor's degree
  2. 1-2 years of career related higher education experience (graduate work, internship experience is accepted) is preferred.
  3. National Certified Counselor certification helpful.
  4. Thorough working knowledge of MS Office Suite and Google Apps.
  5. Working knowledge of presentation software; use of job/internship posting databases such as Symplicity, Handshake, 12Twenty or the willingness and ability to learn within three (3) months of hire.
  6. Strong knowledge and interest in the career services profession.
  7. Strong counseling skills.
  8. Strong knowledge and ability to utilize key career interest instrumentation is preferred. 
  9. Skilled in planning, organizing and effecting events.
  10. Able to learn and utilize current ethical and legal standards governing handling of student records, employment processes and counseling.
  11. Ability to translate knowledge and competencies into action and achievement.
  12. Strong service orientation and ability to relate effectively with diverse individuals and groups at all levels of an organization.
  13. Ability to work collegially and collaboratively.
  14. Demonstrated ability to be productive, deliver high quality work, take initiative, use good judgment and solve problems.
  15. Strong interpersonal skills.
  16. Able to communicate effectively by using a wide variety of in-person and online tools and mediums.
