GENERAL DESCRIPTION | Career Services at the Illinois Institute of Technology seeks a Career Development Coach to play an integral role in supporting programs and initiatives of the office, including coaching, event management, stewardship, and career development support of students and alumni, all contributing to the mission and vision of the university. This position is responsible for assisting students with career development, developing job and internship experiential learning and job search strategies, identifying employment opportunities and general preparation of students for the transition from Illinois Tech to their professional careers. Provides assistance to students and alumni individually and through group presentations, develops industry-specific knowledge that aligns with Illinois Tech’s academic programs, collaborates with staff and faculty in other campus departments in providing career programming. This position will also be expected to support in training and supervision for 4-7 student workers – our front desk student assistant team and our peer career coaches.

CUSTOMER SERVICE | An important focus of the role is to provide high-quality coaching services to students. Providing important career information to campus departments and academic units will also be essential. Some work with off-campus employers is also required to expand the offering of off-campus positions available to students.

Qualifications
Education & Experience | Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Solid knowledge of career counseling, assessment tools, and development theories and practice. Strong background in job search skills and strategies (resume writing, interviewing, networking, etc.). Good organizational and time management skills. Background and experience with multicultural and multiethnic populations. Experience in personal and career assessments is a plus. Knowledge of relevant career development theory is preferred Experience with Handshake or similar career management systems is a plus Proven record of consistently and effectively taking initiative and being flexible. Ability to problem solve, think critically, and explain decisions rationally Comfort with working with a variety of stakeholders – students, alumni, staff, faculty Comfort with extracting and analyzing data for decision-making purposes Appreciation for and commitment to multiculturalism; Possess professional standards of conduct including a strong sense of ethics and confidentiality Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs Comfort with speaking in front of large groups of people
Knowledge & Skills | Basic office software and internet skills are required and the basic knowledge of computer systems management.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 suite of tools is a plus.
Proven record of consistently and effectively taking initiative and being flexible.

SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY | Support in training and supervision of 4-7 student workers in collaboration with Director of Career Development & Engagement

Physical Environment and Requirements | Normal office environment

Frequently stand/walk, sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, and grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
Rarely kneel/crawl, operate foot and/or hand controls.

Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibility | Provides coaching, guidance, and support to undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni, preparing for the transition from Illinois Tech to their professional careers. This includes introduction to Career Services tools, resume and cover letter preparation, preparation for interviews, developing job search strategies specifically designed for students’ majors, and helping to identify employment opportunities.
Percentage Of Time | 35Key Responsibility | Conducts programming on career development skills for students and alumni. Supports other Career Services and Student Affairs activities and helps ensure their success. This should include Career Fairs, Spotlight Sessions, Student Organization Events, Summer Orientations, Resource Fairs, On-campus Interviews, etc.
Percentage Of Time | 35Key Responsibility | Develop and maintain partnerships with faculty, staff, and student organizations to promote career development programs, increase student engagement, and integrate career readiness into academic and co-curricular initiatives.
Percentage Of Time | 15Key Responsibility | Provide assistance in training and supervision for our student workers who assist with front desk operations and peer career coaching. This includes the Peer Career Coaching program, including training and development for student career coaches to provide a professional level of career guidance.
